Grow Logs for hot peppers.
Well all my stuff got wiped out by mice. What else is their to say. Last year Grasshoppers wiped out many peoples gardens as well as mine. Sine of the times ??? Peppers, Corn, the only thing they didn't like was my Acorn Squash. Its on my porch flowering and has three fruit. Got about five pepper plants on the porch that survived the Aphid wars, most others did not. About 20 pots from last year. Might start a few seeds again, gonna rely on some store versions for now. Night temps still below 0c at times and their calling for snow now and then. Had a bit of hail this morning but only lasted a couple minutes. Wind is icy cold at times. Thats about it. :)
"I feel reborn. I'm like a phoenix rising from Arizona.”as Frank Costanza would say. Been awhile, let's go. Peppers where gifted to me yes in a pizza box. TFM yellow SB that were from long family of peppers ,from seeds gifted to him by moi ,from seeds peppers from yes, the Trenton Farmers market. Breath. The other a bhut/reaper mix that he likes for sauces. Ok, let's start, seeds where taken from ripest pods and air dried in coffee filters then zip locked. Germ went good with both being viable stock. Getting 18 hrs under 150w CFL and plant gro bulb. Thinned weakest and planted 2nd germ. Starting second sets of true leaves on 1st and growing strong. Maybe solo cups soon.
Hello All, Well, it's that time of year to start pulling out the Heaters and Grow tent to get them super hots and long-season peppers started... I will be starting my adventure on or around the first of the year. I'm just getting things cleaned up and ready. Clearing out old seedsio logs, and waiting on the seed train to see what I want to grow from there. Reviewing my notes from this year's grow season to see what changes I need to make. I will say I have chosen a few plants to over winter. I will be changing my garden's layout this year... and supplementing the beds a bit differently. I know I want to try my hand at goji berry this year... both black and red. I had an interesting hot sauce made with them and I want to try to make...
Snowdrops out and the early signs of daffodils are abundant here in the U.K. ... we are reminded that winter is all but done however looking at next weeks temperatures I am not so sure. I am late this season I normally sow between Christmas and New Year but last season I was too advanced and the Growtents were bulging before I could get the plants into the polytunnel.... my propagation is crammed full of all sorts of chilli seeds germinating away after their tea soak ... big year for me as I retire in June but really looking forward to this season as I have managed to secure more true Bonnets and a few new Bonnet Hybrids. A massive "thank you" to all that have helped me continue my Bonnet/Hybrids/Hot Chinense journey especially Simmy...
This first post is picture heavy. I originally wasn't going to do a glog this year but have decided as I am going to grow less variety this year there may not be as much posting involved. The pepper list for this year is JALAPENOS, yep, thats it...........although there will be TWO varieties. I have started MUCHO NACHO and EMERALD FIRE, from new seeds no less. Here is the signature image for the blog which was actually from a couple of years ago: Now on to a couple of pictures I took over the last couple of months of the new plants. My wife wanted a jalapeno plant she could keep in the screen porch so naturally a Kratky plant. Here are some earlier pics and current ones will be posted later. It all started with a culled seedling...
I've been hesitating for a long time before starting a new Glog,... last year a lot of things happened and I had a hard time keeping it up to date. I hope that this year I'll manage to be more regular. In January, driven by the desire to sow some seeds, I put some in my aerogarden... My grow list for this year is: (There is no guarantee that I won't sow more) - Pepapeach Stripey (Growdown 2023) : C.Baccatum - Pepadew South Africa (from Welsh dragon Chilli) : C.Baccatum - Pepadew Peach (from Welsh dragon Chilli): C. Baccatum - Rocotto, Mini Olive (Fataliiseeds): C.Pubescens - Rocoto Marlene (Fataliseeds): C. Pubescens - Aji Gusanito (Fataliiseeds): C.Chinense - Arroz Con Polo (Refined Fire Chili): C.Chinense - Biquinho Red...
Long-time THP veterans mourned the loss last August of Amarillo, Texas musician/songwriter/silversmith/chilehead Erin Mason, known to us here on the boards as P. Dreadie. Erin was an enigma, one of the most interesting and creative, yet gentle and loving guys I ever knew. Many of us may be unaware that he played harmonica in one of the original Austin, Texas bands of the early 1970s "Cosmic Cowboy" era, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys. When Erin decided to step off of Alvin's perpetually-touring bus and return to Amarillo, he travelled to Jamaica, fell in love with the Reggae beat, collected the best Scotch Bonnet fruit he could find, and his alter-ego Papa Dreadie was born. In 2013 Erin sent me a few pods of the Scotch...
Links to my grow logs: 2021 2022 2023 This picture is of the seeds soaked yesterday. Today I sowed the seeds of C. Chinense and C. Pubescens. C. Chinense will all sit in the hanging pots in my balcony garden. In 2 weeks I will sow C. Annuum. I do not have the final list of these yet because I have many seeds from which it is very difficult for me to choose. I will edit this message as I decide. Hanging pots: - Fatalii - V2 2022/2023 - 3 plants - Orange Fatalii - The Hippy Seed Co (thanks MarcV) - 2 plants - CGN 21500 - Sulsa - 1 plant - Adjuma - thanks @Sulsa - 1 plant - Humble Servants Homestead SB - V1 2023 (original seeds from MarcV) - 2 plants - PI 215734 - Semillas - 4 plants (last year's revelation, I want more this year) -...
I've opted to keep details of my crossing projects in this dedicated thread rather than include it in my 2021 Glog Edited this post to summarise what crosses I've got and where they are at, I will try and keep it current. Dates in status column reflect when I've updated the information not when the cross was actually made. I've not included every historic cross I've ever made and ignores anything where I haven't got at least F1 seeds unless I thought it was useful to record. Information might be useful to someone at some point. ChilliCrosser Cross Current Status X001 : Bolivian Rainbow x Cheiro Roxa (C.Annuum x C.Chinense) 🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds, not grown on yet. X002 : Fijian Bongo x Cheiro Roxa (C.Chinense x C.Chinense) ❌16/8/21...
This is my third year growing peppers since moving here; my first year was pretty good (completely accidentally), last year was a bit of a disaster due to unusual weather and my general gardening ignorance, so I can only hope for 2024 I can apply some of the lessons I have learnt on the way, and I am so happy to find such a treasure trove of knowledge and experienced growers here in this forum! There are some specific challenges to growing here: in addition to the annual monsoon/rainy season, Kyoto City sits at the bottom of a valley system surrounded on three sides by mountains, which causes cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Summers are particularly hot since we are a long way from the sea, so we get no nice sea breezes or...
Thanks to Bhuter for prodding me with his pics of my Crosses, I've decided to grow another round for this fall/winter. Barring any disastrous hurricanes, I hope to get the Pepper band back together as it were. I dropped seeds from 6 of my crosses (plus Datil) yesterday on a heated tray inside my garage/storage room. If the heat tray doesn't cook them, and with any luck, I should have some sprouts in a few days. In this batch (BSxHA)xPB (Lolo) F2, F3 (BSxADY)xGC Sunspot F3 BSxAP Aji Sunrise F4 JBxBJB Jabooty F3, Brown CDNxGC Sungold Habanero F3 And Datil from Pure Plorida Depending on how these go, I may drop a few more soon. I have one or two more crosses left to plant. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk
It's that time of the year, cold & gloomy outside, & inside the magic is happening. Those little green pepper plants are pushing up towards the artificial sun. Who came up first? The early Jalapeño, Serrano, & the Sugar Rush Stripy. A little game we play LOL. This is the best set up we have ever had before. 4 LED grow lights 2 heating mats, room stays at 66 F at night & 74 F during the day. With 22 varieties & 50 plants we hope to have a real special grow for the 24 season, with a lot of great tasting peppers. 😀 When I joined THP I had just moved from Fluorescents lights to the new LED lights. Outside everything is about the same, it's the indoor adventure that has changed for the better. Compact high output...
About the Grow: The (hydro) spice must flow This year I am starting Pepper Joe’s Leutschauer indoors and transitioning them outdoors The entire grow will be using hydroponics Once finished I will produce several lifetime's worth of Paprika, also cornering the market I'm starting 10 seeds and will do a pheno-hunt in my indoor tent for a mother plant Once the mother is established I will do about 10 clones and transfer them outdoors Stages of Growing: Seed starting Solo cups 5 gallon bucket 55 gallon drum (outdoor) I'll document these methods in following posts About Me: I'm not exactly a master grower but I have successfully created crosses and done quite a bit of pepper growing in the past I can't handle any heat...
NOVEMBER 26, 2023 I'm at it again my season for 2024 has just started. Watch me go nuts again. Give it a week or so watching the dirt for my seeds to pop through the soil and I'll likely look like this.I was gifted 10 industrial strength tomato cages. The ones that are 5ft tall and 20 inches wide. BEEFY Sooo im gonna try to grow some matters from seed. Also I have sewn, Aji Limo, BOO's babies ghost, and Farmer's jalapeno. I have a light, a small fan, a small heater, and a heat matt. The tomato varieties are pictured. WISH ME LUCK YOU WILL ALSO GET MANY MANY UPDATES AS MY OUTDOOR FALL GARDEN PROGRESSES THE BOOKS ARE THERE TO TEACH THE YOUNG SEEDLINGS TO READ. DR SUESS OF COURSE.
Sooo... 2022 season is over and most of my 2023 plants are already there - no reason not to start a new thread already! 😃 See my previous glog... https://thehotpepper.com/threads/2022-too-early-to-get-started.75362/ While all my current plants are technically overwinterers, only a couple have grown through the 2022 season and are considered interesting enough to keep for next seasons grow. Let's start with the famous Schneider farms SB plant, which will be going into it's third season in 2023. It currently doesn't look all that nice but that was also the case during the winter of 2021 so no worries here... Top view: Next in row is my Scotch Brains plant... Top view: And then there's the Humble Servants Homestead (HSH) SB...
