chinense Unpleasant smell from Habaneros?

I purchased a good amount of habaneros from a farmers market and left them in a plastic bag overnight (Bad, I know). This morning I noticed the bag was slightly moist inside. I dumped the peppers out into a bowl and they have a really off smell to them. Anyone else experience this? Are they still safe to eat?

You may want to cut them open and check for mold. I've had habs from the supermarket that just smell really hot and scary, so maybe it's that. Mine have always been tame and fruity.

Is it like a zombie/roadkill smell?  Or just a strong chinense odor?

In my experience, smell and taste are your olfactory senses; they are closely linked.  When something smells bad, with few exceptions, it is bound to taste bad.

When you smelled a zombie? I would love to know more! :P

To OP's question, a single bad fruit in a plastic bag can give the impression that the whole bunch is bad. It has happened to me many times with fruits and vegetables in plastic bags that I bought from the supermarket.
In that case, separate the bad one(s) and either cut off and throw away the bad parts from the bad fruits or throw the whole bad fruits away. In either case, eating any fruit that tastes bad or abnormal should be avoided.

Fruits and vegetables do not taste pleasant to everyone so if this is the first time that you bought habaneros or this habanero variety it might just be their normal smell and it might just not be of your liking.

Thank you for the advice everyone.

So I located a single pepper that smelled really bad, washed off the others and they no longer smelled. However when I started to cut open the rest of them, they were covered internally with black specks and some with completely black seeds. I figured it was better safe than sorry and just went out and purchased a brand new batch of them and used those instead. They're now all sitting bad smell free in my dehydrator :)

I live in NJ, USA.  Roughly 20% of the population here is made up of Zombies, demographically speaking.

Good call re: looking for 1 or 2 skunked pods, raher than assuming it´s the entire bag.

If the smell of the habeneros are off or with a terrible stench, chances are it is rotten and not worth risking to eat.
