Patrick's 2011 Grow Log

Here we are again. I can't believe how fast the time goes by anymore. My pops always said the older you get the faster it passes us by.

I am especially excited about this year, I'm going to try and cross a couple of peppers, on purpose! Haven't made the final decisions yet though.

Anyway, here's a few that I overwintered. The one on the left came from a 7 Pod Barrackpore cutting. It struggled for a bit but the roots are starting to grow so I'm hopeful. Center front is a "large" 7 Pod, center rear was a very robust Dorset Naga and the one on the right is a 7 Pod Primo. The latter three I removed from 5-7 gal pots, trimmed the roots and cut them down to just the stem. They sat in my foyer where they got some limited sunlight through a window. I'm very happy with them.

This is the first tray of seeds I stuck in coco coir last night. I've had success before with this medium as a seed starting mix so see no reason to change. It is nutrient poor so I start using fertilizer at an early stage in the plants life, at a very reduced rate.

Here is what I've started so far:

7 Pod, Brain Strain PRF…………………………..………........ 5
7 Pod, Brown Judy………………………………..………............ 6
Bhut Jolokia, Yellow…………………………………..………........ 5
Pimenta Tiger, AISPES004...................... 5
Trinidad Scorpion, Butch T Judy…………….………...... 8
Trinidad Scorpion, Chocolate AISPES108…....……. 5
Trinidad Scorpion, Morouga HSC……………….……....... 5
Trinidad Scorpion, Yellow AISPES109..……....... 5
Trinidad Scorpion, Yellow 2 SS………………….………..... 5
Trinidad Scorpion, Yellow Morouga AISPES107...…3

Not all of them are in the photo.

They are on a cookie sheet which is on a heat pad. Current temp in the coco coir varies from 75F - 80F. I would like it warmer and may mess with the heating pad settings. I plan on picking up a couple of heat mats tomorrow for more trays.

I have several other varieties to get started and would like to keep my total at under 90 plants.

Here we go! :woohoo:

The season just keeps on going. These are the green and/or tiny bit of color pods I picked several days ago, you can see that a lot of them have ripened. I'll be putting them into the dehydrator pretty soon.

Now these I picked yesterday off of the plants that are currently residing in my garage. I open the door when the sun shines in and they have a florescent light the rest of the time. Not enough light to turn flowers into pods but the green pods are ripening. I'm picking ripe peppers in Nebraska in November.....it doesn't get any better. :)

I'm having a great day!

very nice Patrick! i'm done for the season. have about 1/4 of a grocery bag that i'm hoping will ripen.

Thats awesome Patrick! Nothing like a November harvest huh? Who knows maybe you'll be cutting a turkey or drinking some egg nog with some fresh pods too.

Nice. I miss picking pods already. lol.

Chris

Right there with you man, And I stopped picking a week ago lol.
I don't have the heart to chop down my last full grown plant that's indoors bc it still has some green pods

Looking great Patrick! Sure has been fun keeping up with your GL this year.
Thanks for very much for sharing :)

I can't believe your still picking pods in your neck of the woods

.....I think I hear "The Eye of the Tiger"....playing somewhere....Hopefully I will have the crop turning when I get home in 2 weeks.Still vicariously through
your log and Silver Surfers!Post until the end!!! A pepper porn junky
Thanks for the entertainment AND THE INFORMATION!

Thanks everyone. I went out of town over the weekend and haven't looked at the peppers for a couple of days. I'm forcing myself to wait until tomorrow so I can be surprised by the number of ripe or almost ripe pods. Now how freaking goofy is that? Who knew growing peppers could make you feel like a kid?

Yeah, I know how you feel. I have trying to do the same with growth watch, because if I look at them a couple of times a day they arent going to growing any faster ;) So I try to force myself also to not watch every damn day :D

Man that is SOOOOO goofy...hehe.......I jumped off the boat night before last, got home 0230, watered my plots in the dark with my trusty Jack Russell Uno.Crashed til 0700, then went out to look /pick pods;), Grabbed the Habermelon, and jumped back in the FJ and drove the 158 miles back to Port Fourchon to get back onboard.
cheers

Thanks for the compliments everyone they are truly appreciated.

DJ you got it bad buddy. 300 mile round trip in a day just to water and pick a pod? Congrats!

I wasn't going to post any more pics of freshly picked peppers, figured everyone was bored with them, but I just can't help it. I'm walking through the plants in the garage giggling at every ripe or near ripe pepper I pick. It's darn near the middle of November and I'm picking peppers? I should be picking icicles off of my car!

Here they are!

There are Lemon Drops, Yellow Trinidad Scorpions, my SB7J cross, Orange Bih Jolokia, MadballZ pods, Chocolate Bhut Jolokia's, 7 Pot Primo's and Red Savina's.

Next year is way up in the air for now. I'm planning on moving and getting out of Nebraska come spring. That could prevent me from growing a lot of plants. See if I can find me a small acreage in a warmer climate. The Bahamas sound nice.

Patrick...

"DJ you got it bad buddy. 300 mile round trip in a day just to water and pick a pod? Congrats!"

Well, the other reason wouldn't be PEPPER post!........but as to the watering, apparently there are 2 completely different meanings to the phase"Oh yeah I watered the peppers a lot".....man everything hanging straight down, dry as chalk..except for the Purples by the front door.Gave em a good soaking immediately, saved my bitching until the "other reason" was outta the way, watered em again, picked a week-10 days worth of eatin pods, REWATERED and split.
The Bahamas- no argument, there!Post porn til the end man....

I ran my last batch of peppers through the dehydrator and pulled them off yesterday. I guess its time to get the grinder out. I wimped out and bought a respirator this year, tired of blowing half of my sinuses out and leaving the sticky goo all over my kitchen table. Yep, no more of that for me.

Here's what a little over two pounds of dried peppers look like:

After they dry I put each type of pepper into small sandwich bags and then vacuum seal those. Other wise moisture gets to them and the grind isn't as fine.

Here is my November 15th, 2011 pepper harvest.

I thought I was done. The temps are dropping steadily and the plants are getting very little light, maybe three hours of sunlight a day and one florescent shop light at night and it's not even close to the plants. The leaves are all starting to drop so the end is getting nearer. Most of the plants have just a few small, scraggly pods left on them with the exception of the MadballZ. It has over a dozen large pods left to go. The half a dozen I picked today were nowhere near to being ripe but I'm hoping by picking them that will encourage the others to start. I guess we'll see.
