soil Bonchi; native soil in pots

I'm intrigued by the idea of bonchi. Since I have excess seedlings, I was thinking about growing a few more than planned and trying bonchi later in the year. Are there particular species/varieties that respond better to frequent pruning? Most of the varieties I'm growing have larger (2 inch +) pods, so I'm not sure if they are appropriate to begin with.

Also, I've heard using native soil in pots is inadvisable, but I haven't heard why. My dad used to mix manure, peat moss and native soil into our 7 gallon tomato planters and we would always have a ridiculous yield on 12 foot vines. I'm assuming peppers would respond similarly. Is there a particular reason that using native soil is bad in potting mixes? I can understand the concern with bringing in pests in the wintertime, but other than that, is it supposed to affect the health of the plant?

I guess I'm just being cheap, and I really don't want to go out and buy large amounts of potting mix if I don't need to.
