BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

I hear you B, my idea start would have been early to mid January. Finances got in the way of my green house though. Not sure if you heard but got in an accident that backed me up a little then got a new job so I'm no longer going through what Ryan is at his job. No big though I got a baby Butch T plus a bhut, a peach hab (thanks again chileaddict), and two uba tubas (again from chileaddict) that I'm overwintering.. so I will be behind on seedlings but at least I got my overwintering plants. When I'm ready to start my seeds I'll check back here for lights and soil for sure though.
Thanks again bro I'd more than welcome new plants if you can't find the room!
Aaron

When I first started this I thought I'd be seeing my first sprouts today.
Couldn't be happier with the results so far, still hoping for a few varieties that I really wanted to grow to pop up but its still really early in the game to be getting worried :)

I did not hear about that.. Woulda hit you up if I did. Sorry to hear that dude.. you doing alright now? Congrats on the new Job! gotta be happy about that one eh? How ya liking it? Greenhouses are great but I'm sure you'll be fine without :D Heck you can always wait until fall then get one and extend the season.. I grew without one for 3 years n always had plenty of pods. Don't worry about being late on seedlings.. I gotcha covered dude. When your ready let me know and next time I head out to my moms in BonneyLake I'll meet up with you somewhere.. Anything that I have 4 of.. I'm planning on giving one away. I only need 3.. I got a guy from work that wants some, Ryan if he wants any, Richard if he wants any, and you. Judging by how things are going for it only being 9 days in I'll be amazed if I'm not way over stocked for seedlings, at that point I'm gonna be itching to give some away lol.. Hope everything else is good with you and your family. Merry Christmas.

 43% on the varieties! That's awesome! Keep this up and I'm sure you'll get 90% minimum by next month's end.
I'm doing better, absolutely love my job now compared to last one. Just have to play catch-up for a little while. Thank goodness tax return is better because of the kid :). Plus my settlement is going to be here around the same time. That's when my grow season starts. I'll be late but it's a trial year for me. Once I get it going your more than welcome to check it out and critique it. Thanks for the offer, I'll more than welcome it. :D

Pictures at the bottom this time I promise!
I apologize if my sprout count deal is a bit annoying, I need this for next year though, I know I will lose the papers I have it written on lol..

IMG_1046.jpg

So out of the 4 TS Morugas 1 is very.. Purple.. Whether this is normal I do not know.. They are all under the same light, getting the same water etc, and all the others are lime green. the picture doesn't do it justice.

The three leaf sprout brain strain. I have a good 6 of these 3 leaf sprouts :)
IMG_1048.jpg

Side note: I finally had my first 2 seed helmet problems.. I found a solution.. Nail Clippers. clip off the edges and it almost falls off. Both seedlings of which are completely healthy.. They better show me some results after that TLC haha.

Happy New Years Everyone
Brandon

"Rise and Shine" seedlings..!.......... .

.Wow Brandon , some pretty even germinaton rates happening...

The sprouts all look happy under the T5's.......Are you bottom watering or just misting the tops?

Thanks Greg  I'm pretty happy to see em, also a bit scared imagining the labor I'll be putting into it this summer lol.
Only problem I can see so far is the ones on the far left n right of the flats are slightly stretching for light so I think I'm gonna fire up the second set of T5s, cut out 1 18cell section from each flat and make a 5th flat so they don't get leggy. I can see space is going to become an issue real quick. I'll make it happen though

I just now started bottom feeding, I mist the soil(I try not to mist the actual sprout) for the first week n a half of so.. I like the root to stretch a bit into the soil before I start from the bottom. when their young I find that I either over water or under water with bottom watering. misting helps me micro manage the moisture

This reminds me.. I need to head over to your GL

Brandon

Hey Brandon,

How far are your lights from the tops of the plants?....Do you raise them up for photo purposes, and maintaince?

Greg

Sidenote: All the seeds remaining seem to be on the border of the heating mats.

I experienced the exact same thing over here, all the ones at the border of my propagator haven't germinated so far, it's been almost 2 weeks so I moved them to the middle that was empty too see if they still will germinate after all. Great update, they look exactly like mine, only my box is a bit more crowded at the moment :D

Hey Greg, Actually that is the height I keep them at.. Its about 6-7 inches? I know people keep them around the 2-3inch mark with most operations but most are using T8s n T12s and those who are with T5s are regular T5s.. I'm a bit afraid to move them closer to the lights, the lights are HOT5's and (I'm sure you already know this) but put out almost twice as much as regular T5s. These things produce some serious heat, I've put my hand 2/3 inches below the lights and it's freaking hot.. I'd be amazed if a seedling could take it. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like any higher would burn the shit out of em, keep in mind also.. they are in a closet.. so the heat is even higher than it would be in an open area. I've seen people using the HO's n having them 10inches+ above with good results.. Whats your take on this? last thing I wanna do is raise a flat n have 60 seedlings fry.

Gotcha,
You don't want to cook the seedlings or bake the soil......... (We'll leave that up to "Martha Steward").....................ha
I don't use glass on any of my HID's....That would require exhaust or inline fans, plus the glass condensates and diffuses the light.
But by not doing so I'm limited to how close I can bring the lights, usually 14" for the 400w 'ers and 24" for the 600's. I compensate by using high velocity fans at plant level.
That cools down the air not the lights. I too place my hand below the light to achieve the correct distance with the ambient temperature. Room temperature can very depending how many lights are running.
Best tip I can advise is to keep your young seelings hydrated more so as compared to when their in larger pots.

Greg

Looking good Dude! Yeah fire up that other T5 for SURE! The babies will love you for it. You're going to want them as fat and bushy as they can possibly be. Thats a lot of plants and they will leggy without major light saturation. You're killing this germination bro! What the hell are you gonna do with all these monsters in a month or two? :)

Hey Brandon, I dont know if you answered this earlier, but how much of that Hoffman's did it take for one 72 flat? They sell like 5, 8, 10 ct bags and I was wondering how many bags you used/bought.

Thanks Homie!

Matt

Just wanted to thank you for your thread! I'm still learning and detailed step by steps like this one are helping out!

I only have about 40 seeds planted and I woke up to my second "seed helmet" this morning! So I will definitely be using both your soil and soak tactics next time! I ended up pinching off the leaf tips of the first one trying to remove it with hemostats...but after reading your thread this morning it was fingernail clippers to the rescue! Worked like a champ! So feel good today knowing that you saved the life of a little red habanero!

Great job on the grow so far! I only have half a flat planted and the little lady is already complaining about me taking over the dining room...its not my fault its the only south facing bay window is it??? I guess I am going to have to germ some flowers for her and maybe she'll come around!
Good luck and keep up the posts!

Brandon, I've got an additional Hoffman Seed Starter question: where did you get yours? Striking out locally, may have to have it shipped....

Thanks meat! have they popped yet? I haven't moved mine into the middle but they are slowly but surely finally poppin up. I don't think there's one grower on this site that doesn't end up with a crowding problem at some point, you set out to grow 20 n somehow it always ends up being more like 30 lol.

Thanks Guru! I fired her up n they are all pretty happy about it and the temperatures aren't any higher either which is good. I wasn't expecting the germination success I've had so far so I couldn't be happier! my first BIG grow and everything is going according to plan so far :) What the hell am I going do with all of em? I'm gonna go from taking over my kitchen to taking over my back and front yard  I actually have quite a bit of space, I got a good 300 5-8gallon pots and some 30 gallon pots for my overwinters. My wife burns super easily so she stays out of the summer sun for the most part so the yard is pretty much mine for the taking :D

Hey Matt! super sorry about that dude, I think I intended to answer that question but was knee deep in some keystone ice that night n got a bit distracted lol. I bought 2 18qt bags from amazon and 1 bag filled exactly 4 72cell flats. The pricing is a couple bucks more than the other hardware stores on the list but I've never gone wrong with amazon and I've had problems with hardware stores n their lack of quick shipping times so I just payed the extra few bucks and they delivered in less than a week. Heres the link.

Hope that helps dude.

Thank you for all the compliments! I'm real glad to hear I saved a seedlings life :D I'm telling ya the nail clippers work like a charm! Don't worry about the one with the pinched off tips, I've done that before too and it didn't seem to have a problem growing.. those first leaves fall off after a lil while anyway. Glad to hear my "talkin way too much step by step" growlog is helping people out. I didn't want to be annoying about it but with so many first time growers on this site and seeing the same frequent growing questions being asked everyday I figured it couldn't hurt. I know I sure had alot of questions when I started, and still do! Good luck with the lady lol, I've still yet to turn my wife over to the darkside. She thinks I'm a bit off my rocker, but so do I lol. In the world of hobbies it's pretty harmless so shes happy with it. Good luck on your grow! keep us posted!

Brandon, I've got an additional Hoffman Seed Starter question: where did you get yours? Striking out locally, may have to have it shipped....

I've heard of people in the midwest finding it at nurseries and other stores but I couldn't find it anywhere.. I had to get it shipped. Theres a link in my reply to Matt, amazon's the way to go man :)

Thank you all for watching

Brandon

No they havent, Brandon. I don't think they will either, because in the beginning I let the tops of some of my plugs dry out, therefore killing the embryo I'm afraid. No biggie, I still have seeds of most varieties and will try them again at a later point. How's it going with your younglings? :)

Stefan

Thanks Brandon. One bag Hoffman's rolling via Amazon. Been hankering to try this since AJ recommended last year. He had a quote something like "It's all about the root ball..." And my crappy starter mix last year (really coarse homemade stuff) made for a lousy root ball so I'm trying to eliminate all possible boo-boos.

Will be watching your reports and the PNW weather with interest. Happy Grow Year....

Looking good Brandon. I was curious as well where you are gonna put all these babies when they get bigger? Almost perfect germination rates.

Wise Man, stc! Q to you and Brandon, or who-ever...can't you plant a few marigolds, or violets or something in the pots around the peppers? I'm not an experienced grower enough to answer that. Just trying to keep the ladies happy also.

Will be watching your reports and the PNW weather with interest. Happy Grow Year....
Siliman, has anyone contacted you about the NW Chilefest in September? You're close enough, you could make it. And I apologize if I did and don't remember. I'm going in 6 different directions and have early onset of CRS.
