    Giant Pumpkin+veg. GLOG!!!

I haven't measured the pumpkin in a while. A couple weeks ago we had a strong thunderstorm, with a 90 mph gust, that took out most of the leaves on the vines. Since then the weather has been hot and mostly dry. I'll try to measure the pumpkin in a day or two.

baccatum Baccatum Peppers. Question about flavor

I'm the guy that hates cilantro.   I can eat Lemon Drop peppers like popcorn and I kind of like Brazilian Starfish. In the next week or two I'll find out if I like Aji Amarillo. So far that's my only experience with fresh baccatums.

    I took another measurement today.   Circumference = 65.5" End to End = 41.5" Side to Side = 47.75" OTT = 154.75 87 pounds, maybe?

Visible changes are getting harder to detect, so I figured it was time to actually measure the pumpkin.   Circumference = 64.5" End to End = 40.5" Side to Side = 46"   Based on the equations here: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/viewarticle.asp?id=37   The OTT is 151.   The weight should be about 81...

    Giant Pumpkin+veg. GLOG!!!

I've been a bit busy this week. The pumpkin has been slightly neglected. But there has been enough rain that the garden didn't need me.   It is sitting on pine needles. I went to some garden stores looking for straw, and all I found were pine. Since I have a pine tree nearby, I save my money and...

The pumpkin is still growing a bit everyday. Last night we got three weeks of rain in two hours. That should keep the garden happy for a little while.   I did rotate the pumpkin so the stem end is coming out parallel to the ground. The vine has put out root at almost every leaf.

That is a huge patch. Pick through it periodically, you might find flowers or fruit hiding in there.   I got the first flowers of the season to open today.

Is it just the one vine? The year after I planted mine, vines were coming up within five feet of the original.

    Giant Pumpkin+veg. GLOG!!!

The pumpkin has grown about 50% in the last four days. On Saturday, I removed a few small and rotting pink bananas. I still have five fruits that are larger than a 2 liter bottle. I also removed the first pumpkin. It seemed to have stopped growing at about baseball size.   Here is the pumpkin...

    Solanum muricatum

How old is that plant? I've read that it can take about a year to get fruit.

    Giant Pumpkin+veg. GLOG!!!

I've never had good luck with large tomatoes. My Beefsteaks usually start to rot or get eaten by bugs before ripening.   My second pumpkin is bigger than the first one. I spent some time today looking for a standard size sphere, such as a basketball. Couldn't find one, but I have lots of 2 liter...

    Passiflora Showoff Thread

I have read that the root can be cut and replanted. I haven't tried it yet, but I will if they outgrow their area. Occasionally, I have seen them at garden stores sold as a named cultivar. I guess those are a cutting.   I started my plants from seeds. It took three months and only two out of ten...

    Passiflora Showoff Thread

Back in 2013 I planted two Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) seedlings because they are native, edible and look really cool. In 2014 they spread to 20 vines. This year there are over 50 vines.   2015 Vines   2014 Flower   Time lapse I recorded in 2014 I've been tempted to try growing the more...

    Giant Pumpkin+veg. GLOG!!!

Whether I attempt a giant pumpkin depends on how big this year's pumpkin is and how fast my family eats it. If my family is slow, giants may have to be an every other year thing.
