I agree, and the West vs East seems to be a good idea.
On the other hand, the last method may not be as bad, because now it starts after the Christmas season.
I grew some KBX this year, and it's a trooper, very productive and huge fruits. I have some seeds that I can trade you. They are not isolated, but I didn't grew many varieties this year, so they are probably good.

I have been doing something similar to that too. I rooted it in potting mix instead of water. The only basil seeds I can get locally are sweet and bush basil, so I might as well get some fresh stuff. Herbs in Canada is not cheap either, about $3 for an oz.
