Grow Logs for hot peppers.
So, we're finally in a house and I'm getting ready for my first growing season with an actual yard. The patio back in Málaga was wonderful and never had snow, but I'll be able to grow more than four pepper plants at a time here. I'm not germinating any seeds for the spring just yet, but I did put together a little indoor germination station and started three varieties that'll go into mini-Kratky systems, and one that'll go into a 5-gal Kratky bucket. Never tried hydroponics before, but thought this was a good chance to get my feet wet. The varieties are: Peruvian White Habaneros and Yellow MOA Scotch Bonnets from Midwest Chile Heads, as well as Aji Ayuyo and Er Jing Tao from CaneDog. My heating mat is a cheap one off the shelf from a...

Last season was OW plants only with two exceptions. This year I am growing all new plants from seed gathered from my 2022 harvest and limited to Tepin and Chiltepin varieties. If the spirit moves me I might try for some OW chinenses varieties later on.
"I feel reborn. I'm like a phoenix rising from Arizona.”as Frank Costanza would say. Been awhile, let's go. Peppers where gifted to me yes in a pizza box. TFM yellow SB that were from long family of peppers ,from seeds gifted to him by moi ,from seeds peppers from yes, the Trenton Farmers market. Breath. The other a bhut/reaper mix that he likes for sauces. Ok, let's start, seeds where taken from ripest pods and air dried in coffee filters then zip locked. Germ went good with both being viable stock. Getting 18 hrs under 150w CFL and plant gro bulb. Thinned weakest and planted 2nd germ. Starting second sets of true leaves on 1st and growing strong. Maybe solo cups soon.
Hello All, Well, it's that time of year to start pulling out the Heaters and Grow tent to get them super hots and long-season peppers started... I will be starting my adventure on or around the first of the year. I'm just getting things cleaned up and ready. Clearing out old seedsio logs, and waiting on the seed train to see what I want to grow from there. Reviewing my notes from this year's grow season to see what changes I need to make. I will say I have chosen a few plants to over winter. I will be changing my garden's layout this year... and supplementing the beds a bit differently. I know I want to try my hand at goji berry this year... both black and red. I had an interesting hot sauce made with them and I want to try to make...
Snowdrops out and the early signs of daffodils are abundant here in the U.K. ... we are reminded that winter is all but done however looking at next weeks temperatures I am not so sure. I am late this season I normally sow between Christmas and New Year but last season I was too advanced and the Growtents were bulging before I could get the plants into the polytunnel.... my propagation is crammed full of all sorts of chilli seeds germinating away after their tea soak ... big year for me as I retire in June but really looking forward to this season as I have managed to secure more true Bonnets and a few new Bonnet Hybrids. A massive "thank you" to all that have helped me continue my Bonnet/Hybrids/Hot Chinense journey especially Simmy...
This first post is picture heavy. I originally wasn't going to do a glog this year but have decided as I am going to grow less variety this year there may not be as much posting involved. The pepper list for this year is JALAPENOS, yep, thats it...........although there will be TWO varieties. I have started MUCHO NACHO and EMERALD FIRE, from new seeds no less. Here is the signature image for the blog which was actually from a couple of years ago: Now on to a couple of pictures I took over the last couple of months of the new plants. My wife wanted a jalapeno plant she could keep in the screen porch so naturally a Kratky plant. Here are some earlier pics and current ones will be posted later. It all started with a culled seedling...
Long-time THP veterans mourned the loss last August of Amarillo, Texas musician/songwriter/silversmith/chilehead Erin Mason, known to us here on the boards as P. Dreadie. Erin was an enigma, one of the most interesting and creative, yet gentle and loving guys I ever knew. Many of us may be unaware that he played harmonica in one of the original Austin, Texas bands of the early 1970s "Cosmic Cowboy" era, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys. When Erin decided to step off of Alvin's perpetually-touring bus and return to Amarillo, he travelled to Jamaica, fell in love with the Reggae beat, collected the best Scotch Bonnet fruit he could find, and his alter-ego Papa Dreadie was born. In 2013 Erin sent me a few pods of the Scotch...
NOVEMBER 26, 2023 I'm at it again my season for 2024 has just started. Watch me go nuts again. Give it a week or so watching the dirt for my seeds to pop through the soil and I'll likely look like this.I was gifted 10 industrial strength tomato cages. The ones that are 5ft tall and 20 inches wide. BEEFY Sooo im gonna try to grow some matters from seed. Also I have sewn, Aji Limo, BOO's babies ghost, and Farmer's jalapeno. I have a light, a small fan, a small heater, and a heat matt. The tomato varieties are pictured. WISH ME LUCK YOU WILL ALSO GET MANY MANY UPDATES AS MY OUTDOOR FALL GARDEN PROGRESSES THE BOOKS ARE THERE TO TEACH THE YOUNG SEEDLINGS TO READ. DR SUESS OF COURSE.
It should be a good year for growing peppers. My goal is to find the most productive varieties that thrive in the Texas heat. The growlist will consist of mainly Annuums but there will be a couple non-Annuums here and there. I'll post the official growlist later. Cheers! Grow List: Serrano (Ferry-Morse) Jalapeno Zapotec (Downriver) Jalapeno Pecos (Downriver) Jalapeno Gigantica (Downriver) Jalapeno (Terroir Seeds) Jalapeno (Seeds of Change) Black Cobra (THP) Peruvian Cerezo (THP) Cantina Gold (THP) Thai Scorpion (Ramey Plant Farm) Aji Amarillo (TGCM) XL Antep Aci Dolma X (Downriver) Chiltepin (Terroir Seeds) Peri-Peri (THP) Torres Cattywampus de Arbol (Downriver) Datil (Ebay) Datil (Tim) Datil (Pure Florida) Datil...
I've been a member for a while but never posted a grow log. My usual garden is too boring for that. I use 20-30 pots and overwinter my mama plants in a hillbilly winter shelter. Our ground here isn't good for in soil gardening and I've not been enthused enough to undertake the work and expense to build raised beds.   Now I have my peppers working the way I want and have the need for a much larger grow to supply a project. The main peppers I'll grow will be reaper, douglah and fatalii. For a couple of years I'll do hay bale gardens and heap tons of organic trash into the area. I have monumental amounts of pine straw, oak leaves and bonfire ash every year to dump in the walkways. I think this will do a world of good to make this new...
I've never successfully grown peppers before. My attempts to grow mutants ended in failure. But this season, I'm trying again. I'll exclusively be trying my hands at a variety you guys have probably heard of, known as the Peter Pepper. It's a pepper variety known for being shaped like a private part. I'll be growing the red ones, which are the most phallic. I received the seeds from a shop in Belgium known as Badskin's Garden. Using tricks learned from Khang Starr, I have used a plastic soda bottle and a plastic bag to contain a plant. I put three seeds in there and added water. I put the contraption in my windowsill. I hope this works. Keep in mind this growlog will be updated semi-sporadically.
Well... you guys know me and i know you guys.... I was seriously planning on taking it easy this year, but somehow it happened again! The past few years were crazy productive and my household is completely saturated with peppers. Dried, frozen, canned, you name it we got it. Actually my house is starting to look like a spices warehouse of the VOC (east india company) Wich makes sense, since i'm living in Middelburg wich played a major role in this part of Dutch history. Even today my town still breaths the spirit of that time and so the need and greed for more is both genetic as well it is a product of my surroundings so it can't be blamed on me, right? Middelburg skyline in 1615 (hasn't changed much actually! 😁) As i was saying, i...
Zapotec Jalapeno (Baker Creek 2023 Seed extra pack I saved for 2024 ) https://www.rareseeds.com/pepper-hot-jalapeno-zapotec Piranha SB ( variant of Marion's SB seeds form RFC ) Since this is a variant I will refer to it as Marion's Scotch Bonnet red . I got the Marion's Red SB because I liked the flavor & heat profile I grew seed once of papa dreadie of Erin seed stock shared by Gary Montcalm back then . My was red it looked just like a papa dreadie only red & form what remember it flavor & heat was like this one. The other varieties was gifted as freebies form Jim. So I am growing them out I will need to bring my containers over for some of these etc https://www.superhotchiles.com/product/piranha-pepper-seeds/?v=7516fd43adaa...
Hello and Welcome to my first pepper grow journal. I am not a gardener and I don’t have access to a garden, so I am limited to growing in my basement. I WELCOME INPUT, SO PLEASE JUMP IN IF I AM DOING SOMETHING WRONG. I will be using a 2x2x6 grow tent to keep the plants warm and reflect more light. I have a 150 watt ViparSpectra LED for the space. I see that most of the pepper plants that I ordered are only expected to grow 2’ tall, so I’m hoping to squeeze four plants in the tent. This will put them 12” apart which is a little too tight I suspect. I will buy a larger tent (3x2 or 3x3) if it gets too tight (and if I enjoy this new hobby). I’ve been doing a lot of reading and preparation for this hobby….i hope it proves to be a...
Last year I grew a few accidental crosses, so putting this grow log together to capture the second year variations when they come in. One was a Habanero x Wild Colombian, which is the center right column in the picture below. These were somewhat fleshy, but very juicy, often containing so much water the skins would rip and burst if left on the plant too long. They had the flavor of a Habanero, but more heat and a much longer burn duration, but very tolerable. When they started to ripen they'd take only a couple days to fully ripen. These made a really good hot sauce, or as a modifier to heat up dishes without using a lot of pods. These unfortunately did not dehydrate well, becoming almost like a dehydrated apple, so they didn't make...
