container For you container growers - Advice needed

How big of a container do I need - 5 or 3 gallon. I know that the larger one will give roots more room to grow, but when I pulled up some plants (habs mainly) just before a killing frost, they would have easily fit in a 3-gallon.

The pots will be filled with dirt (top soil), not potting soil. I'm also seriously considering putting them in a trench, in part to ameliorate the effect of summer sunlight on black containers.

Just in case - the area of the garden I want to put them in is dead - this past summer not even a weed would grow. The dirt would not be a something I really want the roots to grow into - it would act more as a shade.

Your thoughts?

I use 3 gallon pots for most peppers. Bigger can be better though depending on variety.

I had an orange rocoto in a 7 gallon container this year and it got 4 foot tall and 5 foot wide. Harvested 82 pods.

I have my nagas in 3 gallon pots and got between 22 and 34 pods per plant.Thee nagas were only about 2 foot tall and wide.
