View Full Version : Pumpkin Hot Pepper

Has anyone grown the pumpkin pepper? I started some plants from seed (Reimer's) and they grow unlike any pepper I've ever grown. The description given says that the peppers look so much like pumpkins that you'll be fooled, but the whole plant looks like a pumpkin plant. The flowers are white with yellow centres(pistills or petioles or something?) which are different from any other pepper I've seen and the leaves are big and jagged. Seems like an interesting ornamental. If anyone has any more info, please let me know. I'll post again when I have ripe fruit.

Can you post a link to that? I couldn't find 'em on the Reimer's site.

Awww....they look so cute!
I looked on www.thechileman.org for this one and he has a pic but says "there is no info alvailable" so be sure to email(or pm) him all the info that you have on this so he can keep that great database going.

The brazilian red pumpkin seen at www.thechileman.org appears totally different than the one I'm growing. I'm pretty new to the forum and don't know how to post pics (or if I'm allowed) but I will try to post somewhere. Pic at reimers only shows pepper and not plant or flower. I have no pods yet but flowering good.

As long as you are posting your own photographs and not linking to someone else's bandwidth, we welcome your photos. Just know that if someone were to take off with them and use them, the forum could not be held responsible. So, if you don't want others downloading the photos ever, I wouldn't post them.

Hi Guys,
Im almost certain from other pictures I have see that Reimers Brazilian Pumpkin Pepper is the same as Aji Brazilian Starfish, pictures of which I posted on this thread:
http://www.thehotpepper.com/showthread.php?t=756&highlight=brazilian+starfish
Another example of the crazy world of naming conventions. I would have to grow if out to be sure

Once again this is not the brazilian pumpkin(Reimers) but the pumpkin hot pepper(Reimers). They don't look at all the same.

Almost looks like flowers I had on a solanum pseudocapscicum plant
Anyway a very weird plant, and it doesn't look annuum at all. I'm looking forward to see how this one proceeds! Very interresting plant you've got there!

Wow that is a crazy looking plant. Do we really know what the classification is? Reimers states Baccatum. I wonder if it is by itself. I just checked "The Chile Pepper Encyclopedia" and it doesn't make any mention of a hot pumpkin any where. Must be a recent cross or find? Pardon me, but I must tend to my hot watermelon.

Reimers actually states Annuum, but I don't trust anything they say anymore.

I don't count on it tasting great since it is an ornamental, but who knows.

A new pic. Notice the deformation on the bottom of some. Looks like a spinny top or dradle. Lots of pods now but none ripe.

They really do look like little tomatos until they turn orange. Many mutants on my biggest plant. I plan on tasting one soon. Wouldn't it be neat to have a hot tomato. Makes me think of Homer Simpson's Tomacco plant(tomato crossed with tobacco)

Sure does look like a tomato plant in the way the sucker shoot comes off the branch. Hmmmm. Very strange.

Here's a final picture of my Pumpkin pepper plant. One I won't be growing again. I tasted it and it was just awful. Sort of neat looking but not worth the effort.:(

Its hard to discribe the awful taste. Very bitter. I had to spit it out and wash my mouth with scope. I could have had a bad one, but I'm not willing to try again. If you want some seeds naganero, I could probably set you up although they may not grow true. If they don't grow true, you may get some interesting hybrids. Actually I have an isolated plant growing at a friend's house that I could use for seeds.

I was in a feed store here in NC. They were closing out seeds at the end on the year. The had 2 packages of pumpkin peppers from the Harris Seed Company of Rochester NY. If you need more info, let me know, I have their address and phone.
