View Full Version : Whats everyone growing this Year?

Ive a managed to 'limit myself to 60 odd varieties. I could even decide on one theme so I decided to go with these three:

1. Wild species - unlike the common varieties which are
fairly easy to grow, many of the rare wild species are
supposed to be hard to germinate. I like a challenge!!

2. Tasty peppers - after all chiles are grown to be eaten.
I've got plenty of new recipes I want to try this year
particularly blisteringly hot ones to feed to my mates
who 'can handle anything'

3. Unusual Pods & Beautiful flowers - as well as being
great to eat, some chile varieties are simply stunning
and make great gifts and house plants.

I tried to grow a bunch - chocolate hab, white hab, yellow devil's tongue, carribean red hab, golden hab, red savina.

All that make it past the seeling state was a single Red Savina, which is doing very well. But I learned a lot, and hopefully will get a better crop next year.

Why not have a good crop this year? There's still alot of time.

Don't feel bad, John, at least one of your seeds sprouted... of the pots I tried to get to come up so far, none have.

I'm sticking to pre-sprouted peppers, from now. I have such a black thumb.

Say does anyone here live near a saspadilla tree???

I have such a black thumb.

Some soap and water should wash that off.

Yeah, probably, but it won't make my plants sprout any better. Sigh.

Really? It's past the first frost here, and being in Michigan, the growing season's pretty short. I didn't think I had time to start a new crop.

If you're just starting now, you could still be ok, but grow in pots so that you can bring them inside in the fall.

Thats where I got my chili dearbol seeds. I got about 80% germination out of the little plastic bag of dried. They are grown great each year I have grown them, even though the seeds are about 5 years old now.

And it's much cheaper than ordering online... ;)

I just counted my garden and I have...
:: drum roll please ::
173(!) Pepper plants. It's going to be a big harvest this year...

Yup, those Nagas were not cheap, but they will be well worth it. Within about 30 min of getting them I had 4 seeds soaking, 4 planted in soil and 4 off to my mom so she could try to germinate them. My garage sits about 90 degees during the day, 83 at night, so they should grow as quickly as they will. Then if I get a few of them I will give them to my friends so that not all the eggs are in the same basket so to speak. I can't wait, this should be fun.

173 pepper plants? Wow I thought my 123 were a lot. (but not the end of my playing) Glad to hear that I can prove to my wife that I am kinda normal.

the first day of Spring being 1st September - let's see how many times the list changes between now and then ;)

4 Naga Morich
2 Golden Habs
8 Red Cayenne
3 Big Jim
4 Yellow Fatalii
4 Yellow Fire (hab)
2 Paper Lantern
4 Bhut Jolokia (I know potentially this is the same as the Naga however I got the seeds from different sources and that is what the suppliers called them - looks like a chile comparo is gonna happen!)

all up I plan to grow around 31 or so plants with at least 6 (maybe 8) being Cayennes. being that I grow in pots I have to plan it with military precision.

I have some other seeds but they may have to wait for the following season:

Yellow Burkina
Peach Hab
Scutaba Hab
Rebetona Hab
Caribbean Antillais
Red Scotch

as you can see I'm only interested in chiles that have two words in their name  I'd like to grow some tomatoes too but that means less chiles - I can buy toms, I can't buy Nagas or Paper Lanterns etc at the supermarket :hell:
