I know this is subjective but I'd like to hear what you folks consider the hottest five peppers currently available to grow. Thanks a bunch.

POTAWIE

nagas, bhut's, bih's, scorpions, and 7 pots

talas
09-03-2008, 12:21 PM
1.Naga morich/Dorset Naga,Bih/Bhutt Jolokia
2.Scorpion
3.7 pot
4.Fatalli
5.Difficult one theres many Datil Or Chocolate Habanero

Just My Opinion the nagas went together at number one because of the closeness of the species :)

Omri

Bhut/bih/Naga, Scorpion, 7-Pot, Caribbean Red, Chocolate Long...

POTAWIE

I think everyone can agree on the Nagas, bhuts, bih, scorpion and 7-pot in no particular order, but after that there is no real comparison, and a lot of room to speculate. The hottest I've ever had was a Trinidad Scorpion.

I agree with Potawie

I've had a big thick skin jalapeno burn my butt and I eat nagas cut up in a cup of salsa regularly. Of the super hot my favorite are Bhut Jolokia, T. Scorpion, Fatalli, Chocolate Habaneros, and Tabasco. Variety is nice and easy with peppers.

Thanks for the opinions people, I really appreciate it.

Another question if you don't mind. For unknown reasons I thought that the Bhut Jolokia and the Naga Morich/Dorset were the same pepper--just different monikers. I take it they're different? Thanks again.

Bih/Bhutt same...The Dorset naga is a hybrid of the Naga morich there all good to grow with similar heat the bih/Bhutts are slightly larger pods that the Dorset/Morich.:)

There of course slightly differnt strains to the plants above :)

POTAWIE
09-03-2008, 06:13 PM
They may have all been the same pepper originally but they've been grown in different regions for so long that they gain some unique characteristics IMO

POTAWIE

The Dorset naga is a hybrid of the Naga morich..

Actually I don't beleive it was a hybrid, it was just selectively grown so same genetics.

Potawie is right on this, I've read that it was selective breeding. Also has anyone ever thought that the Nagas/Bhuts originated from a Caribbean or South American super hot pepper like the Scorpion and 7Pod and bred with some native Indian peppers to make the Nagas/Bhuts or do you think the Naga is it's own pepper (un-crossed) I know the Naga is a Chinense but I think it has some trace of C.Frutescens? What do ya think?

Sorry if this is an old subject:rolleyes:

Also here is my top 5 Super Hots to grow.

1.Naga Morich/Dorset
2.Bhut Jolokia/Bih
3.Trinidad Scorpion
4.7pod/Pot
5.Trinidad Douglah

The Scorpion was the hottest so far for me.

Actually I don't believe it was a hybrid, it was just selectively grown so same genetics.

It if was selectively grown or a hybrid is a bone of contention in dorset POTAWIE as the men who supplied the plants said that it was the same plants they used for seed and no selection/Hybridization was used..Who`s telling the truth? who nos :)

POTAWIE
09-04-2008, 07:22 AM
The Dorset naga was selectively bred from what I understand for:large plant size, early maturity, and large, wedge-shaped fruit with a finely wrinkled skin

The reason they can't get the Dorset naga registered as a PVP variety is because there is no new pepper or genetics, just basically a different shape

Thanks people, I really appreciate the information. I hope I didn't open any old wounds and my apologies if I did. I know how heated species ID can get.

I havent had the scorpions or 7-pot yet, so that said:

1. Nagas (including bih/bhut/dorset/morrich, they are THE hottest)
2. Chocolate Habs
3. Fatali
4. Burkina Habs (perhaps not, but the ones I have are incendiary)
5. Scotch Bonnets or Red Savina

I'm sure the ones I haven't had would pre-empt some, but since I havent had, I cant say.

Your mouth may see it diff.. ;)

Heh, I made a vid of me eating one of my funky habs....Jeebus H. Christmas those are hot.

The worst part is it lights you up almost immediately and they are a PITA to chew while yer on fire since it's almost solid pepper flesh. Can actually feel when ya hit a section that has the cap juice droplets on it...ugh.

Worst thing I've eaten so far. Naga lasts longer overall, but these are lethal by themselves. They are wonderful in stuff, but by themselves, Aieee...

Messed my shiat up I tell ya. :D

Guess I should upload it huh?

Throw Trinidad Douglah up there for sure. I just tasted it for the first time this morning. I got two nice ripe ones. Took a sliver. OMG.

This thing is INSANELY hot. Shooting pain occurred through my tongue, up my nostrils, etc. I think it may be the hottest I've ever grown. I have little feeling left in my throat!

My wife and I were taking taste tests of 7 pods last night. This one's hotter IMO. The placental tissue and capsiacin levels are amazing! This would make a damn nice brown powder!

I like this comment. I can't say that I eat Nagas (I've never actually been in the same room as one...deprived soul that I am) but I've cut up two Red Savinas and sprinkled the rings on a plate of Nachos -- along with a few other hot (not super-hot) peppers...no problem, and yet I clearly remember having a Jalapeno that blew the top of my skull off. The same experience as Pepper Ridge Farm had. The surprise of it all!

Great Thread!! With all these "new" super-hot peppers around, the well known and accepted Scoville Ratings Chart is being re-written on a daily basis. From 500,000 to 750,000 to 1,000,000 to 1,100,00 to 1,500,000. At this point aren't these peppers simply pepper spray in pod form? I'm just kidding...I love them hot.

Thanks for this great thread!

Nah, police spray is 5mil+, and tastes like shite. Trust me. it's bitter and horrid. ;P

Although, i hear IGG sprays it on pizza instead of EVOO....

I'm sure you know, but my guess is just a guess on that 1.5 million SHU. No testing was done except for the pepper in my mouth. :) I agree that they are getting up the "pepper spray in a bottle" type hot. I never would have beleieved it three years ago!

Whats next, "weaponized nagas"? Hahahaha.. oh wait...

That how they were developed in certain countries..as weapons..and used I might add. Read news outside of the us and you'll learn a lot.

Imagine Naga spray..because it exists.

US police spray is 5mil, but I'd wager the african version is MUCH worse. They have no problem with genocide and inhumane things. From what I hear it's been engineered to the point of causing actual topical burns and permanent internal scarring from breathing it. Think mustard gas.

Be glad of where you live, eh?

It wasn't on purpose.

A long time ago, I was at a Spring Formal with my g/f and someone set off a blast of pepper spray about right next to us.

Stung like mad, ya can't breath, and tastes acrid.

I've tried the pepper spray that is given to mailmen here so they can protect themselves from dogs. I used to have a bottle in my car, just in case... Tastes horrible and makes one cry, it really burns in your eyes, but I don't think it is as strong as the police spray.

Your right buddy it isn't..The police stuff is to stop people in there tracks immediately and must be damn painful
