The next time I go to Waitrose (nearly 25 miles away so it's a rare treat)
rare treat  I dont know if its because of different countries, or not, but 25 miles is considered in the neighborhood to me
given I put on average 100-120 miles a day, oh yea @#$^%&**$@@$&^ gas prices :banghead:
thats only 30 mins away, I take it you dont travel far from your home.

I agree & most people in USA would also agree that 25 miles is not far away to be considered a "rare treat", I just dont know what the brit's consider "far away"
in my eyes a "rare treat/ trip" would consist of in the 250+ miles range.

I think its relative to the traffic conditions. 25 miles can be a day trip if its single lane with a roundabout/traffic lights every 50 metres & a few thousand other cars/trucks on the road.

Well ya, and consider all of the UK fits nicely in Texas. :)
England/US State comparisons:
If by England you mean the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, it's between Oregon and Idaho. (96,000 - 93,280 - 82,750 sq. mi. in land area.)
If by England you mean the island of Great Britain encompassing England, Scotland and Wales, then it's between Kansas and Minnesota. (81,820 - 80,820 - 79,620 sq. mi.)
If by England you mean the country of England alone, it's between Alabama and North Carolina (50,750 - 50,350 - 48,710 sq. mi.)
Thinking in that scale it's quite a bit different..plust population density can be way different too.

25 miles is a lot here only because you can usually only go 40 MPH max on single lane each way roads.

Lets just say i live just south of Tampa Bay and i'd consider a "rare treat" to be something like driving to Atlanta....about 8 hours away.
Anything i can do round trip(reasonably) in a weekend is no biggie to me. Except for the price of gas, which is usually what holds me back nowadays.

wow,you could go through almost EVERY thread & start pulling posts & making new threads "just because" those people made a post thats not "on topic" with that certain thread.
but whatever.
& I thought about it some more & yea 250 miles would not be considered "rare" I've done this many times (200+ miles 1 way & then back) all in a day.

Now about traveling. Sometimes I drive up north on the weekends to get away and that's probably a little over 200 miles one way. I've drove down to Kentucky for the weekend before as well. I don't do it as much now though. Very seldomly actually. My favorite road trip was when I got back from my deployment overseas a few years ago. I had quite a bit of leave earned and I drove around the US just to say I could do it. From the Detroit area in Michigan to San Diego, CA. Then up the coast, over through Nevada (Should have kept going to Washinton state.) Up through Idaho, across the top through Minnesota, through the upper penninsula of Michigan and back down. That's a few thousand miles.....My A@# was sore!! States visited on that trip. Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. I think my next big trip will be SEVERAL years from now, but I've always wanted to ride a motorcycle up through Canada, up to Prudo Bay Alaska in the Summer. Now THAT would be a trip!!

It is all relative to what you are used to. If 25 miles is far to you, then I envy you! You probably spend more time living life and less in traffic. Good for you!

Several years ago, my then g/f (now wife) and I drove from Edmonton, north to Yellowknife, back down to Faro, then up to Inuvik, back to Dawson, thru to Tokyo(?) in AK, did the lap, and back to Vancouver in 3 weeks. Great trip. Take spare tyres, reasonable amounts of dirt/shale roads. If I had to go back to the US, it would be AK, despite the cold and dark. Good coffee mostly everywhere, good people, beautiful scenery.
Here in Aus, biggest single day on a motorbike was about 1100km (690miles) in 12 hrs. Fell off when I stopped, couldn't walk.
Also on that trip, I rode from Fitzroy Crossing to Townsville in 4 days. O/n in Kunnanurra, Katherine, Barkly R/house, and then thru to T/ville. Single lane roads and road trains are a b**ch!
If only I could do that stuff again.....
