I'm just curious if there's any others out there that enjoy eating meat that's kind of out of the norm. I actually really enjoy eating deer heart. I know it sounds gross, but it's actually really good. I cut out the hard artery looking things and stick a fillet knife in it. I cut it in a circular motion from the outside in until I reach the center. It'll end up being one long strip of meat. While I'm in there I trim out the other tough looking connective parts. Then I rub olive oil on it, sprinkle garlic powder, and dice up some onions in it. I put a couple strips of bacon along it and roll it all up. Put more bacon around the outside and toothpick it together. Then I place it in the oven on 350 until it's done. It honestly taste like a roast, but the texture's a little different. My wife tried it and actually said she was suprised that it did taste good. I'm just curious if there's anything odd that anyone else likes to eat here? I think I remember a guy eating some bugs on here one time, so I know I'm not alone...lol!!

Your not alone man. Maybe it's not just me. I noticed a few people on here will eat just about anything INCLUDING myself! Also, yes I've eaten squirrel, gator, rabbit, ect as well. Snails are delicious. I guess the strangest one I've eaten and eat when available is rattlesnake BBQ. Once you try it, you'll never think it's weird again.
When I was younger and in better heart health, the high cholesterol innards of lots of animals were favorites. Brains are awesome and can be cooked in many ways.
Gator is very good and in very good supply where I live.
Sushi of course. There are a few types of sushi that are a little weird.
I like sushi, but honestly the only kind I really like is the salmon.

I love tongue, mainly Ox's tongue but I'm really fussy with meat (annoyingly fussy). I won't eat anything off the bone, chicken leg, etc. I'm guaranteed to find a bit of bone or chewy bit in a sausage, burger or a slice of ham. I'll find bone in a tin of tuna.

You've got me beat Philip:shocked::lol:. While I couldn't eat my pet, I've always wondered why people judge on what animals fair game for food. As long as it's not human it's all food and edible in my eyes. Just out of curiosity though. What's it taste like? I had a friend in the army that ate spider monkey before and dog when he was in Korea. (The spider monkey was near south america I believe though.) Is it more like Chicken, Beef, or Pork?

If I had to eat a human burger/sausage or that dogs head I seriously think I'd have to go for the human burger/sausage (as long as I knew what part of the body the meat came from). Also it would have to be from a lean person as I don't like fatty bits on my meat, and obviously not on the bone.

Yeah, I've seen that. In the movie I was talking about they don't eat human flesh, but it was just a comment that the butcher made. He knew his anatomy and how to kill efficiently;) Now that we're on the topic of cannibalism for some reason Hannibal Lecter gives me the heabies:shocked::lol:

delicatessen is a great movie... check it out some time.
rMy brother came down from Darwin yesterday with his thai girlfriend. I cooked a bbq and she was joking around about eating my dog...I think she was joking.... you know when some one holds an animal in such a way that you can tell they sizing it up for a meal. kinda like a farmer holds a lamb or a chicken...its not the same as a kid holding a lamb or chicken...its holding with intent.
left to her own devises I think Tanasuan would most likely have eaten my dog lol.
TRUE story.

When I was in the Philippines, for a brief stint, we were walking back to base loaded to the gills (drunk) and smelled something really good cooking. We came upon a street vendor who said..."Beef on a stick..one dolla." Now, just by looking at the meat on the grill, I could tell this wasn't beef. It just didn't look right. Then, a bunch of other drunk guys came up and bought a few..."Oh, man...this stuff is GREAT!!! Dude you gotta get some.."
So, when all of the commotion calmed down, I asked the vendor what it really is smelling so good on the grill.... "Fresh monkey". Well, it did smell really good. I bought 4 sticks and was surprised at how good it was. Kind of stringy, but pretty good.
One of my favorites is fried alligator tail. That's some good eats!

emu
crocodile
kangaroo
enjoy a few sheep kidneys & brains...battered & deep fried sheep brains was my fave...i try to replicate it with my own brain every w/end.
other stuff
snake...words cant describe how nice snake meat is.
spit roasted goat...very nice too.
There are things i wont eat though...
cage eggs...think about it, they cant be good for you.
veal...really f*'d up idea. Very very wrong. Tell everyone i know not to buy it, complain if i see it on a menu, write to tv stations when they have a veal recipe on one of their shows. Seriously bad karma to have anything to do with veal.

you do know what they need to do to an animal to 'produce' veal...i mean the modern way of feeding it painkillers & antibiotics so it wont feel its own leg bones breaking beneath it. I say feel because it cant see, it's been chained in a standing position since birth in the dark (sunlight may toughen the meat) for as long as the drugs & feeding slush of hormones can sustain it.
They try to chew the nails out of the stall not to be free, but to get some iron in their diet (that too may toughen the meat)
Traditional veal is a 3 month old calf...through deprivation of movement, sunlight, real food & a cocktail of drugs modern 'intelligent' humans can now stretch this out to 3 years of unimaginable torture.
its sick

I don't like being cruel, but I do realize that chickens and other animals aren't exactly raised in the best of conditions either. However, I still eat it all. Me personally my dream is to become as self reliant as possible. My wifes dream place as well as mine is a nice chunk of land. Say about 40 acres. (We're actually saving for it in about 10 years.) Beef.....who needs it shoot deer, vegetables and peppers....grow a ton of what you need, blanch/freeze, can, and dry. Raising a pig and a ton of chickens and some cute little rabbits for food sounds good as well. I already told my wife when this happens don't start calling the pig names unless she wants to name her bacon, chops, ect:lol:

Want Spanish food tonight? Cocker Spaniel.
Something at the game? Daschund puppy on a bun!

I agree with you on that one, also my Grandpa said they used to pass off horse meat as beef when he was a kid during world war II over here. It happens everywhere, that's why I also process my own venison when I harvest a deer. I'm sure some is kept, resold as venison sausage, and I'd be willing to bet that from a butcher someone elses deer is probably mixed in with yours. Meats meat, but I don't want someone elses deer. ESPECIALLY if they didn't take care of it properly before hand. However, I'd be willing to be most veal is just veal though. In order to be veal it just has to be a baby slaughtered calf and honestly I think most meat suppliers aren't going to even go through the time of chaining a calf. However, it does happen and I realize not all chickens, and pigs are raised in the best of environments either. Here's the way I look at it though. If there going to kill it it may as well be eaten:twisted::lol: Personally I prefer hunting and I do find it ironic when people eat meat and are against hunting. (I've met them a few times.) The way I look at it. It's natural, leaner, doesn't have all of the hormones and crap in it. Also, up until the animal dies it runs free.

Back when I was a game warden in the everglades and big cypress swamp, a wildlife biologist and myself decided we would have an all game meal from what we killed (or obtained) that day...and had some fresh fish we caught the day before
deer
rattlesnake
possum (really greasy)
raccoon
rabbit
armadillo (taste like possum)
frog legs
turkey
alligator (didn't kill it, got it from a 'gator trapper)
soft shell turtle (absolutely delicious)
redfish
speckled trout (wheatfish)
mangrove snapper
black grouper
snook
we hunted half day (friend killed the deer, I killed the turkey) then cooked the other half...had about a dozen people over and all of the meats were deep fat fried (very healthy but I was 30 years younger then) to compare the taste and texture of the different foods...
all in all, it was a real piggesh day...we had a blast and full belly after it was over...the best tasting of it all was the rattlesnake...

Folks, keep in mind that if you try armadillo, that it is a natural carrier of Leprosy. It's the only way that people get the disease now, and can only be dangerous if you under-cook the meat.

Armadillos have been known to carry the bacterium associated with human leprosy (Mycobacterium leprae), but there has been no conclusive evidence that human beings can contract leprosy from contact with armadillos. The Field Manual of Wildlife Diseases in the Southeastern United States states:
...Whether humans can contract infection (leprosy) from armadillos is debatable, although case histories suggest that a few occurrences of leprosy among armadillo handlers in Texas may have been acquired during many years of catching, handling, skinning, and eating armadillos. A widely accepted hypothesis is that the organism exists in the soil in certain regions, especially Louisiana and coastal Texas, and that both armadillos and humans contract infection from this environmental source.

rabbit - as for the deer heart, it does look like a nice chunk of meat I was gonna try it couple years ago but gave it to the dog instead. but I'll try it on the next deer if I dont shoot the heart out.
as for people that eat meat but are against hunting, what can ya say other than they're just idiots! my niece once said to me that she's against killing animals (hunting) & I said what about that chicken your eating, she said "thats different"
I laughed at her & said you're dumb (in a jokingly way) she didnt know what else to say.
as for eating dog, sure serve it up I'd eat it & horse too! its just meat/steaks.

Gold fish is good, Pigeon taste great, Tripe is goodish, Grubs are ok but I don't like the pop they make when you bite them. Flies and Maggots have no real taste. and the Worms tasted a bit like mud. chocolate covered Grasshoppers were crunchy but good. I think that is it.

But eating a Gold fish is like eating my dog to me. I had two as a kid, names being/been Billy Beef Burger and Freddy Fish Finger, (inventive of me I know). You can't get much meat off them surely? I mean I'd quite happily eat a fish out of the river down the road because I don't know it.
* Second thoughts I would not touch anything out of the river down the road, there used to be some kind of chemical factory right next to it, I'd probably glow in the dark if I ate anything out of there*

anywhere from two fingers up to about 2 pounds normally...you just cut the head off, gut them, roll them in corn meal and drop them in the deep fat fryer until they float...the meat comes off the bones very easily and I love eating the crispy fried tail and fins...

My Goldfish were about 7-8 inches long (including tail) but they ended up in a neighbours pond and it was hard to tell 'who was who', I'm sure my two were the ones that changed colour from Gold to white though  I'm just happy Billy Beef Burger and Freddy Fish Finger didn't end up in the deep fat fryer (having visions of him covered in breadcrumbs now). Once something's got a name, you don't eat it.

Here in the UK it's a bit awkward to get 'weird' meats
but i'll try anything once, growing up on a farm as a kid helps you see things differently when it comes meat.
There are some things out there that are just fantastic like a really good quality haggis (butcher made not supermarket stuff) and black pudding,
And goat is good but hard to come by in most parts of the country unless there is a big caribbean community, and after wanting to try it for ages i found i little shop near the site (building) that i'm working on at the mo.
So in the end nothing to weird here in britain.

I ain't a lover of fat or gristle either, but you can't really notice it in a good black pudding.
You can't beat a good sunday morning fry up (or grill up it's healthier!) after a saturday night but it has to have haggis and black pudding.

Yea a scotch pie as sort of like a mince pie but it's mutton and spices and a bridie is the same shape as a cornish pastie but theses no veg in it and the pastry is different.
And to get the best you need to get them from a good butcher as the mass produced ones are pretty rank

It was about 8 feet long, 18 inches at it's widest and had a head on it like a dragon.
A set of rattlers on it as thick as your wrist.
The Tanner wouldn't give him the meat. Said it was a side benefit of the job.
that size I'd have to see pictures to believe this, because a diamondback cant get that fat(the size you speak of is constrictor size) or have rattlers as thick as a mans wrist. lengthwise (8') yea but the rest I doubt.
as for the tanner, I would of went elsewhere & not do business with someone like that or skinned it myself.
chilehunter
05-24-2008, 03:23 PM
thats fine, but human judgement can be wrong sometimes as to actual facts (in this case size) to get a rattle that size it would of had to have a VERY VERY GOOD diet nonstop & live MANY years (betting beyond 10-15 years & if that species even lives that long ?)
& if it was that big it would of been a record breaker, why no pictures ?
are you talking about 18" diameter or circumference ?
chilehunter
05-24-2008, 04:38 PM
nat - I dont know how you can consider what I've said as being rude
I simply stated "I'd have to see pictures to believe this" & simply stated "human judgement can be wrong sometimes"
I'm not really calling you a lair BUT I wont believe it either unless proven otherwise, sorry.
& no you did not say "diameter" you said "at its widest" & that right there is a large constrictor size (pythons & boas) thats around 15'-20' or more in length to reach that kind of thickness which anacondas are the fattest/heavist snake (the size you speak of is bigger than a average size adult human torso)
& yea I looked up eastern diamondback rattlers over 7' is very rare, so if you killed a 8' diamondback with a 18" dia., which would make it probably 4 1/2' in circumference  dude thats bigger than the 2 species of snakes for world record of biggest snakes(retic & anaconda)
that supposedly sized rattler ya killed would of made world record & would of been far more worthy keeping than a measly record wild pig. & a money maker on your behalf just for having the snake dead or alive.
& wouldnt a rattle (tail) with a base the size of a adult human wrist be at least 1' in length maybe up to 2' ?

- people saying buying chile seeds or pods on Ebay are a scam, even while theres members here that do sell on Ebay & legitimate items.

I'm a 200 lb adult man & I dont even have a 18" wide torso & the circumference is 3'5" but found an object that was 18" across & it had 4'6" circumference, so yea I have a very hard time believing your claim for 8' snake while other bigger snakes need to reach lengths of 20' or more to even come close to this width.
I dont know what I'm talking about ?
I guess many years ago belonging to a herpetology club & reading up on several different types of snakes & owning 3 retic pythons (1 was around 12'-13' in length) & 1 burmese python, I know nothing about snakes whats so ever. shit recently until days ago I always thought snakes had legs but thanks to you I now know they dont ;) but did you know theres actually 1 snake that does have legs ? (I forgot the name, so sue me)
I'd have to say you're the immature individual ! & your actions show it ! you go on a ranting childish name calling & delete your past posts & say you're leaving this forum. & then make a thread in a inappropriate section to do your childish rant, all because I wont believe your claim  also for a good reason why I wont believe it!
you aint nothing but a pompous individual !
& for the other members here, I've never said squat for insults towards nat. check the posts & a moderator can see whats been added or deleted from previous posts of mine & you wont find any insults posted or deleted!!! other than I wont believe his claim.
& for the so called rest of you forum members that think I just try to start arguments, whatever, when someone states BS I'll call ya on it ! or as for the "pass the seed parcel" I addressed some issues - but when I did I was a asshole but down the road you members brought some of those issues back up, so now whos being the hyprocites ?

(Yes, some parts of Jewish writings are the same.)I remember it mentioning animals with split hoofs, fish WITH scales, ect. Technically I don't think Rabbit, Squirrel, ect is Kosher either. It was the old part in the law trying to limit what people ate to what's cleaner and disease free. I know pigs have split hoofs, but there's something else it fell under if I remember correctly. When it was legal to sell dog meat here there would be dogs bred for consumption only just like other animals are. This way you wouldn't have the chance of catching rabies from eating them. They were usually 18 months to 3 years old. My wife and family happen to come from a part of the country where dog meat is considered a delicacy and they still privately partake from time to time.

y'know, if we just started farming endangered animals for consumption we wouldn't have problems with extinction. i mean, i doubt the cow is ever gonna go extinct. and then everyone could feel like they're doing their part to save a species every time they enjoyed a nice juicy panda steak...

I have no clue as to the freshness of the snales. They were definitly dead, that's for sure and I don't think they were the canned veriety. You can actually see the shells in the pots on my latest grow log in the gardening section. Don't know the species.
They were imported directly from France, they did not pass Go nor did they collect $200. I'm going back from more latter this week and will ask more questions of them.

Yeh I'd eat horse it just a funny looking cow at the end of the day.
IGG I'll get some photos up eventually my camera died.
I have a breeding program consisting of 6 lrg ie 4cm shell petit gris.
so far I have 4 batches of eggs with the first batch almost hatching completely.
Each batch I have in individual 2 ft tanks with fly screen grills.
Hopefully they willcontinue to breed over winter, they should as they are inside and conditions are controlled. When spring rolls around I have a garden prepared with lettuce spinach brocolli and various herbs. The bed has a pen built around it. When we put the snails in it we will put a shade cloth lid on it so snails can't get out and preditors can't get in.
the beds demensions are 4mtres long by 1.5 metres wide. A good comercial density for snails is about 200 snails per square metre, so I can grow out a heapin that area.
IGG I guess you can get attached but hell you just gotta remember its a snail... I'm either gonna eat it or stomp it lol

this is what i'm saying tho, cows wouldn't make it in the wild but as long as humans farm them they'll never go extinct. panda's aren't that adaptive either, they're the only bear that doesn't hibernate because they can't build up enough fat on their nutritionally devoid diet, which is almost entirely bamboo despite the fact that fish are available and it has the digestive system of a carnivore so they can extract even less nutrition from it. the babies are about 150grams at birth, blind, and need to be licked by the mother almost constantly for weeks after birth to stave off infection... the question is not "how are the pandas going extinct?", it's "how are they not extinct yet?"

yes bears are labeled as carnivora animals BUT they're omnivore animals.well except the polar bear which is a carnivore, but the rest of them (& except the panda) are omnivores. I'd have to say about 2/3rds of their diets consist of fruits/berries/nuts/plant matter/insects vs animal flesh.

Believe it or not I agree with you on that one. There's no need to eat an endandered animal. Kind of like caviar from a beluga sturgeon. I have no problem with people eating caviar. HOWEVER, from a threatened fish just to prove a snobby point it's kind of annoying. (It is expensive and it's honestly just a way of saying.....I have money to blow.) I've always found that survival show kind of off. For one the guy can probably eat whenever he wants and he's not really lost or stranded. I actually rather enjoy learning about some of the indigenous plant, fungus, and animal species that I can eat. Survival in other ways is interesting as well. However, back to that guy. I was honestly going to say that earlier, but didn't get to it yet. I think they taste like a cross between an oyster (Actual sea ones not the mushroom.) and an earthy morel mushroom. What's funny is when my wife eats morel mushrooms sauteed in butter and garlic she says they taste like escargot. They do taste pretty similar. Definitely a tasty treat.
