My peppers and tomatoes have taken a beating not being hardened off very well before plantout, then with the storms, hard rain and high winds they are becoming acclimated to their new homes...I have the back yard "rimmed" with pepper plants and the pictures take you on a tour...forgive the quality of the pictures, but was in a hurry....all of the seeds were planted 28-29 January 2008 so today is their 3 month birthday...(except for the big Nagas and Red Savinas)

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk136/AlabamaJack/pepper13-042808.jpg

I am not proud of the way the plants look right now...they are kinda scragley but I hope they will get their second wind and take off...was 40F this morning here but already back up to 62F...was below 50F for 8 hours and below 45F for about 3...

They don't look THAT bad at all, AJ! They can take much more than a lot of other plants, I had some that looked worse than yours and they're all alive and well...

Lookin' good AJ, glad to see a post from you as we've not heard much from you in over a week. Glad all is well, I figured you were just busy busy busy transplanting. Your plants will really take off as they acclimate to their new enviroment and the weather cooperates.

I hope they all survive too Chiliac...several have that droopy look this morning after the cool weather and hot sun out now...I will just assume I am stressing them...might as well 'cause I sure as H*** am.

PRF, you guessed it...busy transplanting, playing gigs, working...(notice I said working 3rd... ) only have 48 more to go to get to 235 then I am out of pots...

Thanks RB...Roscoe is almost 9 I think...he is a male without his workings (neutered @ 10 months)...best natured animal I have ever had...(Weimaraner just in case)

Thanks Quad...that windmill comes in very handy with all these spring storms we have here...the yard is not bery big but it has to suit my pruposes...wife is very understanding about my habit..

Thanks AJ, I knew the breed of dog, even what he was called but the reason I asked is because I wondered if he cocked his leg up against your plants? I don't know if being neutered makes a difference, my sex education with dogs is some what limited

actually heres er a starnge one..a gentleman(great friend of my mums)was an avid gardner and was praised for his tomatoes, which where always big and and with a fantastic taste..he was the pride of the commnity,he recently(Hes 85 now) told my mother his secret to his gardening prowess..hed go out each night and pi`` on his plants and always noing hed get a good crop..well of course it put a sour taste in many of the commuintys mouths(cough) when they heard this..but im sure even now..that late at night..you can hear the quiet footsteps of welsh folks going outside to er water there prise toms..

p.s no way im ever gonna do this myself...but there is the biggest jalapenocampaign on chileman..

Thanks Sanj...it has been quite an effort but the real work is almost over...almost time to sit back and watchem' grow...

Is that s piece of Roscoe's poo on pic 5? :)

Yup...I think he goes 4 times a day...lots of crap...too bad it is not useful...

Hey AJ, how you prevent them all from cross pollinating?

Not worried about the cross pollination on these...these are eating peppers...the ones I want to keep pure are "farmed" out to neighbors that don't grow peppers....

Keep us posted AJ and hope they all pull through.

I think they will be ok...just wait and see for now...

Its funny, but he doesn't pee in the back yard unless he squats...he already has that territory marked and no other animals come in...he always pees on my sweet william flowers in the front flowerbed tho...and you can tell it...

Thanks Mick .... going to get a 30 gallon barrel today and use it to mix my nutrients in it...then I can pull it around on my little trailer behind the riding lawn tractor...I hope I have more peppers than I know what to do with....then I can make some concentrate ala BB....

gotta say im jealous..your just showing of lol :D

no use to be jealous Talas...if you want to be jealous...just look at Bent, Potawie, BB's and Pablos plants...I am a far cry from their expertise...

AJ,

More questions than anything, but I want to start by saying that is one heck of a backyard. No one can claim you aren't doing your best to fight global warming with all those plants adding oxygen and soaking up CO2!

First - is that a white, permament marker you used on the containers? That is one thing I have to get around - keeping track of what pepper is in one pot.

Two - will you leave them around the fence and buildings or move them to full sunlight in time?

Three - several plants look quite leggy. Is this because they were tall when transplanted? How much soil do you leave at the bottom of the containers? Do you try to plant to the bottom leaves? I have a few plants that are only about two inches short of reaching the top of a large container, if I transplant to the bottom leaves.

Four - what do you use for soil in the containers?

I'm really looking forward to your updates as it will give me at least a month of warning what to expect!

Thanks Mike..

Answer 1. It is a white paint pen...got it at walmart in the arts and crafts section...called an Elmer's Painters...says it is permanent and streak free, non-toxic and acid free...the permanent part is what sold me...

Answer 2. The plan is to see which varieties do well in full sun and shuffle them around to the spots that suit them best...I have areas that are full shade all day, the west side gets morning sun and shade in the afternoon, the east fence gets morning shade and afternoon sun and the north fence gets sun all day long...

Answer 3. some are quite leggy indeed and I have decided to stake them...already used 100 stakes and need some more...I am trying to leave about 4-5" of soil between the bottom of the root ball and bottom of the container...I am planting them as deep as I can...I want roots to grow from the lower portion of the stems below the leaves to make a sturdy foundatin for the plant...some are planted deeper than others of course...it just depends on how sturdy the stem is...the sturdier the stem, the less deep I plant them...

Answer 4. The soil in the containers is the 60/40 compost/cushion sand I got at the recycle center...when I did the hole in the container, I put about a tablespoon of dry organic fertilize in, set the root ball in there and water in with my botanicare nutrients with some superthrive in it...

I agree with Potawie, your work has just begun bro but what fun you will have at harvest time .Good job

Thanks Dan...this kind of work is going to be a joy after all the back breaking work I have already done...

Thanks Daisy...I get my containers at my local nursery...they are 99 cents each...I have used 224 already and going back for another 50 tomorrow...I may have been able to find them cheaper but my nursery treats me right and it is very convenient to get there...

WOW, your setup is quite stunning! I can only imagine the tremendous effort and time it took to get all those beautiful plants growing and individually potted. You did a great job and I wish you the best keeping them healthy and mostly keeping up with the huge numbers of harvested pods in a few months!

Yeah, it's an investment.

I have that in proportion I guess.
I spent like $50 setting up so far, but I have a fixed income, so that's a lot for me. But, I do love those dang chillis..more all the time..heheh.

Plus, I seem to recall you saying you may sell plants/peppers to the locals...that would recoup things quite nicely methinks. ;)

Looking good AJ, just keep your eyes peeled for pests, Im still battling aphids, though they are thinning out now. Your going to have an awesome harvest & I cant wait to see your pictures then.

With my soil pots, Ive got a 220litre Olive bin raised up on about 5 blocks high of those "besser blocks" same as those ones which you used for your raised bed. I drilled a hole in the bottom & fitted a ball valve & attach a garden hose to the ballvalve, I can then walk to all my pots which need a drink.

We all get rewarded for our personal and financial efforts all year long IMO. It just sucks when sth needs to be bought and I'm broke at that time and that is very likely to happen - can't work atm and am living off very little money, so having to buy dozens of containers and all the soil etc in less than a month is kinda scaring me.....

Gladly, I am getting all the small containers for free, but still... Life's a struggle, good things need their time and a lot of effort.

Hey AJ,

With the wife's business, we compost dog doo in a worm system. Proviso is to avoid "scat" for 2-3 days after applying those liquid flea/tick treatments (e.g. Advantix) and internal parasite treatments. Both of these will kill the worms. Also, we were told that the worms will perform best if only fed poo (as opposed to feeding them some waste vegetables and some scat).

Reason being is that everything tastes like ice cream after a mouthfull of dogs**t -- even to worms!

You know, I thought I heard something...actually when I am out there with my plants, they warn me of approaching intruders...

Amazing AJ! +200 plants! What are you gonna do with all your chilis? :)

most of them will be dried and ground into powder...am going to mix and match all the powders for different tastes and burns...I am looking for a specific taste I can't describe but I will know it when I taste it...I really like the O. Hab/O. Thai/Tabasco Mix taste..but it is lacking both heat and front burn...that is why I am adding tepins/pequins to the mix...that will give it the immediate front burn on the tip of the tongue and lips but it goes away rather quickly....

rambling again...

It always depends on your budget. Some people spend more money on their hobby per week than others could spend on food per year. Needless to say, it's a cheap hobby in comparison, that's very true! And it saves us money, too. After all, we'd be buying pods if weren't growing them, right?

rainbowberry
05-02-2008, 11:21 AM
Yes you're right there. I spend too much buying fresh Scotch Bonnet pods each week, but in the summer when I don't need to I hope to to be rich, I should be with the amount I spend on chillis at the moment.

Chiliac
05-02-2008, 11:24 AM
At least you can get Scotch Bonnets! All I can find are Thais (if I'm lucky) and some overpriced mixed packs that sometimes actually contain really nice pods, but nothing really special. I think I found a Scotch Bonnet in one of them once so far!

rainbowberry
05-02-2008, 11:35 AM
I don't get mine from a supermarket though, all we get is Birdeye, green Thai looking chillis or the "mild only God knows what they are". I asked my local fruit and veg man if he could get them when he went to the wholesalers and he said he could. He dosen't sell them in his shop but buys me a tray each week.

Chiliac
05-02-2008, 11:38 AM
I tried that at an asian store, but gave up trying to make them understand what I was about after 5 mins and bought a batch of Thais. I can get Jalapenos, Habs, Nagas and more by mail and they are actually really good and fresh and not too expensive, but you have to buy at least one kilo and postage is 9€ so I'd need to make a really big order to make it worthwhile...
