If you're anything like me, you listen to music while you're on the computer so you won't go crazy out of boredom.
So I thought it would be nice sharing some of the songs that are worth mentioning.
Just to be clear, NOT EVERY SONG YOU LISTEN TO! that's just a waste of time.
Basically any song that is especially good, funny, shocking or whatever you think is worth mentioning.

This is so much better than recommending songs from memory, because (well at least for me) memory will deceive you!

I'll go first:
Iced Earth - Dracula

I'm listening to Radio One and they've just played:

Fascination by Alphabeat, I think it's awful, sounds like something out of High school Musical.

Why would you know how High School Musical sounds like?
Anyway I'm playing my Iced Earth list, but after that:
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

I like random songs, not from certain years. stuff like "Here Comes the Sun" and "Yesterday", but everything they made is great.

Um, I had just put in the cd, so that would have been "Twig and Berries". I've moved on, though and Louis Armstrong is singing "High Society" in calypso.

Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers and I don't like it. The thing is I don't know from all I listen to which are English or not so I'm probably listening to songs no-ones ever heard of.

I'm listening to " flipsyde : we the people (album) "
good songs on it are " someday - spun - flipsyde - revolutionary beat - time "

otherwise I listen to satellite radio while on the computer, switch to several stations (music to comedy)

most time I keep the heavy music for work, so I can jam out on the jobsite. & listen to lighter music after work.

Don't Stop (Fleetwood Mac song) but it's a cover! on the album call "Like a Version" which was released here in Oz about 2yrs ago. Covers of all sorts of songs by Aussie bands.

Next up on the playlist (after this album) is Hayseed Dixie singing AC/DC's Hells Bells (using a bicycle bell). Good version.

you might be right there, man! I used to listen to some crust a few years ago, but I'm not too much into it anymore. Whenever I put it on, I still like the raw energy and the songs, but it's not my everyday cup of tea anymore. I used to listen to Driller Killer, Extinction of Mankind, Disgust, Disfear, Doom and the likes... Basically all the Dis...bands!

Nowadays I'm more into The...bands! But I still respect all the heavy stuff! Diversity is the key (imo).

Rush - Snakes & Arrows

DD, you a big Rush fan?

How does Snakes & Arrows stack up to their other work? I'm guessing its in the same vein as Counterparts/Test for Echo/Vapor Trails, or have they taken a new direction after their extended writing break?

Is that a very german habit you described? I heard about people doing that, but didn't realize it's the Germans. Whatever, I honestly don't think I'd do sth like that... Actually, I hardly ever go on holidays like that. I've done it once and went to Spain, because it was a present (the holiday, not Spain!). The most misbehaving people were from Denmark (sorry to any danish member!!!). They partied all day and nite singing along to "We will rock you" for hours and only opened their door once every hour to throw out the empty beer cans. One of them sat at the breakfast table with his underwear on his head and so on....
On the 2nd day my money was stolen and the lamp in the room was loaded with electricity wherever you touched it! Great holiday!!!!

Mmm, it's definitely the Germans that claim the sun-beds with their towels. We can go down to the pool to get a sun-bed at 6am and you've beaten us to it. A lot of hotels have banned it before a certain time though. Read this from the news last week.

Yeah, it's been a while, but I think it's good if bands take their time with a new album instead of putting one out as fast as possible to cash in on their current popularity.

I saw them at a festival last year, they were one of the first bands to play, but they were good, it was obvious they were having fun!

I really like The View. Surpring stuff from guys that young! I never saw them live, but I saw their Glasto show and they seemed to rock the crowd pretty well. Obviously Libertines-influenced, but wtf, there are much worse influences a band could have...

The view once did a copy of The libertines- 'Don't look back into the sun' on radio one and it was brilliant, as good as The Libertines, maybe even better. They're getting better singing wise, The views records have always been good but the singing on Superstar Tradesman was a bit hit and miss. You can really hear The Libertines/Babyshambles/Dirty Pretty Things in their music.

* That is a classic Omri. It reminds me of my big brother and the freaky looking posters that used to adorn his bedroom walls.

It's a great song, about the forbidden temptations. in this case, the needle.
Anyway it's not that old. most of the songs I listen to are older (some by decades).

No, I haven't seen them live, even though they're number one on my list. there's a rumor about a 2008 tour, so that might be my chance.

There's a really good chance I'll be in Germany just in time for Wacken, so that's pretty cool (Iron Maiden!!!). :)

omri, thats not even all of the music I listen to or have, a hair shy of 25GB in my music library, I just did a quick run through & listed some.
I could list off probably 50 more artists I have, which you've already mentioned some of them or others have, plus many more that are well known.
I have a wide range of music, I get sick of listening to the same type after awhile. you only can take so much of the scream your lungs out kind of music  well at least me, I like the stuff but want differnet music after awhile.

25 gigs? I wonder how much memory my entire CD catalog would take up. I have about 250 CDs and well over 1,000 tapes, I'm not even going to mention the vinyl collection... I could probably listen to three or four whole albums a day and not hear the same thing twice for two years.

Oh...Miles Davis

chilehunter
03-19-2008, 10:04 PM
DD - it depends on how many songs are on the album & how to copy/burn the CD - how many KPS or ? 56,98,192, - or something like that I forget the numbers or what its called.
tapes would be hard to change over I'd think, can it be done ?

but I have 4687 songs for 24.66 GB & still adding. which isnt much compared to others, & by the sounds of it you'd probably have 15,000-20,000 songs if you could put all of them on your computer
I wish I never sold all my music years ago, but building it back up now, at least the better ones.

DevilDuck
03-19-2008, 10:16 PM
Cassettes and vinyl and both be converted, but it's a process. You can buy a CD burner for your stereo and burn everything there then load it into your computer.

I have even seen USB turntables.

chilehunter
03-19-2008, 10:25 PM
I suppose then the time involved to transfer the music would be worth it vs buying CD's, since you do like the music. as long as theres no skip's.
or does that equipment needed to do this cost ALOT of $$$ ? if it was around $100 I'd buy it & add some albums here & there over time.

but I've noticed music recorded on analog equipment is not that loud when played back on the MP3. meaning other music recorded digitally is normal sounding but when a old song (analog) is playing its not loud enough to hear it always(comparing it to distances on a jobsite, but earbuds/close to speaker should be ok but not as loud)
these albums I record on the highest KPS or whatever you call them to get the best out of the music/album

DevilDuck
03-19-2008, 11:05 PM
Ah... This is where VU meters come in handy. You don't see them much anymore. Make sure the level is at 0 (zero). That way you get a good signal. When recording anything from analog to digital, there's a huge difference from analog "zero" and digital "zero". Digital zero is a max level, anything higher than that will get distorted, and digital distortion sucks. So.......... When burning something from an analog source, make sure the loudest portion doesn't go over zero on the digital VU meter.

Home stereo CD burners can be had for right around $100, but you may have to go to a music (instrument) shop to find one. Hi-Fi shops are few and far between these days.

When I burned some of my vinyl, I also had a mixer, EQ, and a compressor/limiter to tweak out some of the the pops and hisses.....but that's what I do. I'm a sound guy and I'm picky. That's most of the reason I don't own an iPod. I can't stand the way music sounds through those no matter what it's played through, or the sample rate. I can tell the difference between a CD and an MP3. The compression rate on an MP3 file is so drastic, I can hardly listen to the radio anymore. The midrange is just murdered and way out front. There's just no way to EQ it right. You can get close, but there's got to be a better way or format for mass storage.

It's funny sometimes.... When people come over to my house and see the size of my stereo and speakers they say, "You know there are smaller speakers these days." I just simply reply, "Yeah, but they don't sound like this." Then I crank it up a little....

It's funny to listen to a self proclaimed audiophile brag about their MP3 catalog and the large sample rates. (I'm not necessarily talking about you chilehunter) Then, I see these little tiny underpowered speakers that give a modest, at best, playback and massive sub-woofer to try to make up for frequencies not reproduced with the little toys mounted to the walls.... It just doesn't work.

chilehunter
03-19-2008, 11:46 PM
yea you do alot more than me when I transfer music to my computer.
I put the CD in & click rip (or was it burn ? but whatever I click either button)

hey it doesnt bother me you laughing at me or people like me, how we copy music to our comupters or using MP3. you're a sound tech & appreciate the better sound. nothing to be ashamed about.
but I wasnt bragging about my music samples/recording, just saying I had more music than what I listed.

I plug my MP3 into a dewalt jobsite radio (if not using my XM radio) or into my truck radio.

back to the analog thing. the stuff you said didnt make much sense to me, because I'm not a sound tech :)
but if theres a way I can make my older analog recordings sound louder/better with normal clicking of some buttons on the computer. I'd appreciate that info. otherwise I'll just live with their quality - but annoying

DevilDuck
03-19-2008, 11:56 PM
Well, how do you transfer your analog stuff?

If you can monitor (listen to) your analog source before ripping it to your HD, turn up the volume on the source until your speakers start to distort. Then, back it off a little. If you use Windows Media Player, change your visual to the green bars. That's kind of like a VU meter without the scale. What you see there is all of the frequencies broken out. If you have it set up "full screen", you don't want any of those bars to get 3/4 of the way up the screen. If you use iTunes....you're SOL, sorry. iTunes sets its own level.

chilehunter
03-20-2008, 12:11 AM
oh wow, you give me hope  because I do use windows media player. if it can be done I'd delete all my analog music & reinstall it.

when I transfer music from CD to computer I just put CD in & click burn/rip  & call it good. (these are analog recordings on a CD not tapes/vinyl)

so what your saying is change the visualizations to the frequency bars before copying the CD to test/listen to the sound first. & make sure they dont go over 3/4 way up.

how do you change the bars up/down if needed ?
do you need to listen to the whole album before copying it ?
will those bars stay set once set when you click burn/rip (copy) ?

all I can say is thank you, & I appreciate this info. because I've tended to not listen to some of my favorites because of this reason but now you give me hope for fixing this problem. you the man

I saw an ad for a record player and built in CD burner for around $350 US. I just don't know how good it would be. I think it would be worth it if it did alright. I have a huge vinyl collection and have thought about giving it a try. Then once on Cds I could transfer them over to mp3. It would take months of work though...

oh wow, you give me hope  because I do use windows media player. if it can be done I'd delete all my analog music & reinstall it.

when I transfer music from CD to computer I just put CD in & click burn/rip  & call it good. (these are analog recordings on a CD not tapes/vinyl)

so what your saying is change the visualizations to the frequency bars before copying the CD to test/listen to the sound first. & make sure they dont go over 3/4 way up.

how do you change the bars up/down if needed ?
do you need to listen to the whole album before copying it ?
will those bars stay set once set when you click burn/rip (copy) ?

all I can say is thank you, & I appreciate this info. because I've tended to not listen to some of my favorites because of this reason but now you give me hope for fixing this problem. you the man

Hmmmm.... you may be screwed. I haven't messed with WMP-10 all that much, but in the older versions, there was a level setting in the menu. Something like "Edit"..."Preferences"..."Import Level" and you could adjust it from there. I just looked at my WMP and there's nothing at the top like there used to be. Now, on the EQ settings there is a level option, but it seems to be for playback only. Let me do some more digging around in there.

When you said "analog" I was thinking direct from tape or vinyl.

Try DCex - it's Freeware and the results are good. http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

# Advanced jitter correction (based on the cd-paranoia ripping library)
# Indicates track progress and jitter control
# Normalization of audio signal

Of course, the results can only sound as good as the CD. Make sure you choose a birate of 192 kbps or higher!!! If the CDs themelsves don't sound as good as the vinyl, thats probably because they aren't vinyl and may not have been remastered for a CD release. Vinyl and CDs require different kinds of mastering.

Harel Moyal - Lo Mekirim Otha/(They) don't know you

It's not a singer I usualy listen to and I do kinda dislike him, but I like this song.
This guy is one of those instant stars. he was on an Israeli show very similar to American Idol and won.
Anyway this song is about how people tell him what to sing, write and how none of them knows him. very catchy. ;)

but it was funny listening to it.

it was a comedy bit about "scouts & midget porn" - satellite radio.

I like the last song
Yep, it's a pretty great song. it is very sad, though.\
Here's a VERY rough translation, just to get the general idea. sounds a lot better in Hebrew.
There are moments
I ran out of words
The head is just full of images
Noises and imaginations

Moments
Ran out of explanations
The heart is working for hours
To cover up the tears

If there's a heaven
Or a little hiding place
Hold me now and my wounds
And take me to it

Mother
I want inside my soul
To go home, to my house
Just like when I was a kid
Calling you - mother
I want inside my soul
To go back to me and my image
So I won't lose my mind

There are moments
I don't know what to do
Facing red eyes
Facing heights and abysses

Moments
That everything just breaks inside
And everyone say their prayers
And I'm full of curses

If there's a heaven
Or a little hiding place
Hold me now and my pain
And take me to it

Mother
I want inside my soul
To go home, to my house
Just like when I was a kid
Calling you - mother
I want inside my soul
To go back to me and my image
So I won't lose my mind

If there's a heaven
Or a little hiding place
And take me to it

the blokes not bad either

Chiliac

You bet I do, although I like their first album more than their 2nd and think that teh 1st Milburn album is the best Arctic Monkeys albums there is! The AM's debut is a classic for sure, I felt a bit let down by the follow-up. There are plenty of good songs on it, but it doesn't have the magic of the first one....
