Time to start seeds is getting closer.
What are you planning to grow?

Well I just bought my first house.
So I will get a real garden next year YAY!!!!!!
Bad news is I'm moving April 27th. Not sure if the seedlings will survive the move. :(

Anyways this year my focus is low heat big on taste peppers.
I want low heat peppers so I can add MUCHO peppers to my recipes and tweak the heat with nagas and habs.

Here's my list for 2008:

Chilaca
Goat's Weed
Aji Dulce red
Aji Dulce Yellow
Cachucha (Ají Dulce)
Datil
Trinidad Perfume (second try from a diffrent seed source, seeds from Reimer failed D'OH!)
Manzano Amarillo
Naga
Cappucino scotch ( hottest bastard pepper I ever tasted from Potawie)
Orange Hab
white bullet
Ancho
Big Jim
Paprika
Alma Paprika
tabasco
Jalapeno hot
And a few "bell" peppers

indoor plants :
Bent's "Birdhab"
pretty purple
black pearl

I'm sure my list will grow....

I've got my list narrowed down to about 60-70 varieties but hoping to get it down to about 40. I too am also planning on growing several mild/flavourful chiles this coming season like:

Tobago seasoning
Trinidad perfume
Chilaca
Merida pumpkin(habman)
Orange baby bell
Jimmy Nardello
Chupetinha
Ancho(brown)
Chimayo
Guajillo
Big chile hybrid
Numex sunset

I see a lot of people growing the Trinidad Perfume pepper, but hardly anyone growing the Trinidad Seasoning pepper. I've grown them both, and while the Trinidad Perfume is a beautiful pepper, I found the Trinidad Seasoning to be handier for cooking and eating. Has anyone else tried the Trinidad Seasoning?

No, I grew both this year. The Tobago Seasoning pepper is more wrinkled and hab looking than the Trinidad Seasoning. I think the Trinidad Seasoning is, um, more sweet/fruity and less habanero fruity tasting than the Tobago Seasoning, if that makes sense.

I'll post some pictures from home tonight.

Thanks Pam. According to the chileman's site they are the same but I'm sure now that that's wrong. Now I have to find me some Trinidad seasoning peppers too. I'm also looking for Tobago sweet scotch bonnet.

I found the Trinidad Seasoning to be handier for cooking and eating.

Why? taste better or what.
And do these heatless hab really taste like regular habs? Or do they taste more like bell peppers?

habman - I grew aji dulce 2 & trinidad perfume last season thinking cool a habanero taste w/o the heat that should be interesting. well they dont taste like a habanero whats so ever IMO more like a bell pepper. I wont waste my time with these ever again.

Habman - its just my opinion about those heatless hab types. but like its been said, theres some bell peppers that taste great & IMO better than those heatless habs also more bang for your buck - more pepper flesh vs little hab types.

Small list but a good choice.
Naga and orange hab are prolific plants and produce very tasty and blistering hot pods.
If I could only grow one hab I would choose Caribbean hab but that's just my preference.

Heh, the main reason I chose the habs and nagas is because I want the Nagas for heat and flavor (and later on a sauce), and the habs for more habanero powder - I'm ADDICTED to that stuff now, it's sooo good...

I dont know where you live or the method you're gonna use to grow them, but for the Naga if you dont live somewhere its warm with a long growing season or you plan on growing them inside. but you might be disappointed with them if you dont have either. just because they're very slow growers.

my grow list for 08' is still up in the air, I'll order some but most will come from a farmers market (I have a black thumb somewhat). I know some of you would say thats expensive but I think it's about even price, when you take into account the cost of electric/soil/seeds/grow lights/fan/your time & what ever else ? maybe I'm wrong I dont know ? but for the basic chiles sold at the market you can get them cheap.

I'm planning to grow about 30 varieties next year (it won't stick at 30 I'm sure). Mainly different Habs and if I have room Scotch Bonnets too. I tend to grow just one plant of each variety because of space. I'm getting a greenhouse around February so that will leave me more space to grow inside.

3- orange habs
3- jalapeños
2- serrano
2- Tabasco
2- Limon habs
1- orange riccoto
3- Naga morich

I'm really going to have to do some work to the yard to get all of those in there. My back yard is really small and I'll have to dig up some grass to get all of those in. The pics of where I'll be planting will be pretty funny.

hello all
man after reading all these lists of seed i feel like such a poor noob at this chili seed thing.
i got two bhut jolokia plants and some Bhut Jolokia seed just put in a planter . thats it for me so far.
as soon as i harvest the few pods on the BJ then that will give me a new generation for selection. I think ill keep only the seed from the most uniform /largest pods and see if that helps to stabilize the pod shape
over time. along the way I would like to try my hand at an F1 or three .
one that interests me for no apparent reason is c.chacoense X Bhut jolokia
another is the Fatali x Bhut Jolokia...the third is a Native Pueblo variety Isleta x Bhut jolokia {this one will need to go back to selected mother or pod sister several generations to tone down the immense heat that will most assuredly emerge from this hybrid}.
If I have a successful F1 emerge I will be asking for test growers, but thats at least for next season so lets all have fun
this season.

I canned 120 quarts of tomato juice this summer, along with about 24 quarts of whole tomatoes, so I can cut back a bit on them next year. Plus, had I staked them and then we didn't have the blistering, record-setting summer heat and drought, I would have had twice as much.

This biggest problem is the lack of room. I have only about 1400 sq. ft. of room, unless I use the side or front yard (and hire a good divorce lawyer!) Geez, you would think the missus and kids would like the idea they have much less yard to mow!

One other plant I would love to grow, but am having an impossible time finding seeds or seedlings is a Money Tree. It doesn't have to bear $100 fruits - I'll settle for $20s, $10s or even $5s if it is prolific. Hopefully, it will not be an annual, but you can bet I would try to overwinter it!

You wrote a lot of generic names, without being specific.
For example you wrote "Birds Eye" (Birdseye), well some many peppers carry that name, not just one. "Habanero"? what kind?

wordwiz

Omri,

The Hab not identified specifically is the common Orange variety. The Birds Eye is Zimbabwe Birds Eye (hey, that's what the web site said - don't nag me if the spelling is not correct!).

I'll post something in the Welcome Board about growing peppers, just in case you are interested. Nothing derogatory, just why I am doing this (saves the Big Pepper from having to move a post!).

Remember, in Trinidad I would imagine the 7-pot and Trinidad Scorpion can probably be bought at a market stand as easy as it is for a U.S. chilehead to get orange habaneros and jalapenos.

Rarity is all relative. :) That's what so great about having representation from all over the globe on these forums.

Apparently not. I read an article today (can't find it or I would post a link) that basically said one could find the 7-pod and such, but only by asking around - they are not available at the local pepper market. This makes sense, since finding these seeds is not easy.

I've never tried it yet but I got my seeds from http://www.tomatogrowers.com
"Omar's Lebanese #5442 (30 seeds) $2.25
The seed of this variety reached America via a Lebanese college student who obtained it from farmers living in the Lebanese hills. Juicy pink beefsteak fruit has exceptional flavor that is rich and delicious. Tomatoes tend to be quite large, averaging 1-1/2 pounds. Indeterminate. 80 days"

Another huge tomato is Giant Belgium with an average of 2lbs and can grow to 5lbs. But omar's lebanese is said to be better tasting.

I never had much luck with the Belgium giants last season. I'm also growing Zogola for another large type. Its ironic how the largest tomato is the delicious which is said to be one of the worst for taste.

I like the brandywines, but they take a long time to mature...the poor taste usually occurs from picking too soon...they require lots of heat and sun so I found that growing them in black plastic containers on the patio worked best...also, they require a lot of fertilizer (cow manure (soil) and fish emulsion (foliar spray) worked best)

I'm trying a few different tomatoes this year, as I like to can them - either whole of as juice.
From RareSeeds.com:
Roma
Beefsteak
Delicious
Jersey Giant
From Tomatogrowers.com:
Bulgarian
Giant Belgium
German Pink

Last year, I canned 120 quarts of juice and 20 quarts of whole tomatoes. I would have doubled that, but a late summer drought with intense heat (for our area) did them in. Plus, I didn't stake them, which I will this year, though I may need to use trees to hold up the Bulgarians and Belgiums.

I am growing the following this year:

Sizzler
Lemon Drop
Krakatoa
White Hab.
Golden Hab.
Bolivian rainbow
Chinese Five Colour
Pusa Jwala
Tabasco
bangalore torpedo
Cayenne
Cobra
Fatali
Scotch bonnet red

Also Bulgarian carrot (not having much luck with these seedlings, they keep wilting as do my lemon Drop...could my Spanish climate be too hot for them?)

I planted all the seeds at the same time and the Sizzlers seem to be doing the best.

The thing is it's not just the overall temperature, but direct sunlight can actually burn you and your plants. so even if it's 40c in the shade, as long as they don't get direct sunlight, they're ok.
It's only a short part of the year, not year-round.

Hi Whocares (member)
Its been a pretty mixed up spring! At the start of May everyone was panicing (as they do every year) that the temperature was rising and that we had not had our expected rains, over the past fortnight we have had some fierce thunderstorms bringing with them plenty of rain. One night alone my rain-catcher in the garden measured 40cms of rainfall which is a lot for us.

I have planted a mixture of seeds this year, my best performer by far seems to be the SIZZLER and HUNGARIAN WAX which have withstood the changable weather (wet and chilly one minute, hot and sunny the next)
I planted LEMON DROP, WHITE HAB,and BULGARIAN CARROT and they have not done so well, have wilted in the heat and not liked the rain either. My seeds were all coming up well but the rains have stopped the remainder from germinating and the soil got mouldy

My plants have also been plagued with greenfly and whitefly at the moment which is a bit of a battle, I don't know if this is weather related.

I'm starting with a single tray (135 plants) and we'll see how it's going. seriously thinking of a lot more.
Maybe I'll sell them at the market.

Thanks Chilihunter, I just hope I can keep them all alive. The weather here is a little on the cold side but it seems to be over 60 at night. I seem to be having better success with leaving the peppers inside for a couple extra weeks. It's still a learning experience for me. I will have to compare the list I posted to what I have in another month or two.

Even though summer is almost here and most of the plants have been outside for at least 10 days, my plan this summer is to learn more about cloning and growing indoors.

Agree with you Mike...I have taken 2 cuttings from my nagas and they are not dead yet...potted them in 6" pots...growing thru the winter is going to be so good (hopefully)...

AJ,

If I can get this new (to me) science down pat, I won't have to worry about cross pollination, sprouting seeds, etc. I can see me waiting until this summer to see which plants turn out the strongest, taking cuttings from them and starting a new plant. Once it gets big enough to "top" - cut the heart out so it will sprout new branches, do that. And keep doing it until I have 24-48 plants of each variety, in 4, 5 and 6 inch pots. I figure a jalapeno, hab, and Hungarian Hot wax, along with three super hots. That would be 288 plants. Add in six tomatoes and three cukes (24 ea), and I have 500 plants I can sell. Throw in another 25 knockout rose bushes (they are huge favs here) and it would easily fund setting up a huge grow room, maybe even a huge and smaller one.

Just because this is a hobby doesn't preclude it paying its own way!

Mike
