Someone go out & fix this before I go nuts.

Customers please be advised you may experience slows or congestion when accessing internationally hosted web sites. This is the result of a fibre break in the US caused by a landslide in Portland, Oregon. Confirmation has been received from the US that due to severe storms in the location of the fibre break, this issue will be ongoing for the next 14hrs. Work on restoring the fibre break will commence at daybreak US time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

My Internet connection isn't that fast to begin with, but I don't see any slowdowns.

I think your connection would go through Europe & west, mines going through Asia & east.

I require my 2 Mb/s to sustain my nerdness. :D

Apparently my connection isn't that slow, it's a 1.5MBit/s one.
I thought I was the last one with that kind of speed. :P
Just a couple of days ago I talked to someone about loading a stream video, and warned her that it might take a couple of hours.
Five minutes later she was done loading. :(
My connection is with me for years, that's why it's so slow.
Just so you know, some people in France have a direct fiber optic connection. :(

are you on ADSL Omri or cable?
ADSL to the death! :hell:
We had ADSL before cable, and I got mine a long time ago.
Also at some point the cable network centers were overloaded, so it sucked.
Now it's all good, but I still have my old ADSL connection.

bentalphanerd

Cool - i had the opposite experience...moved once to a suburb that only had ADSL....it was pathetic for me. Now I have the fiber come into my router & out to my 5 comps...2 TB + of space. Need my speed. I spent the last 12 hours going through my terrabytes looking for a bug, until I saw that explanation on my ISP site.

check this out Omri..

**Warning** Please only try this if you know your way around a computer - if the instructions don't make sense -Please dont try this**

To speed up broadband try here first to test yr speed - www.bandwidthplace.com (or http://www.speedtest.net/) - then here to apply a reg patch - www.speedguide.net/downloads.php - reboot- then run the first test again. removal tool also available from 2nd link.

See how you go it increased my connection speed by 30%

Omri

No more than 2%-3% increase.
BTW I'm not that stupid, I know my way around a computer.
I actually took a class about micro-architecture in computer chips.

Don't you mean K10 or Penryn and later Nehalem?
Well Penryn is just a modified version (smaller fabrication and added transistors) of the already structured Core, and it kicked K10's ass.
So my guess is that the new vector processing based Nehalem would make K10 its b1tch.
Better infrastructure resulting in amazing in-chip communication, better memory and QuickPath - AMD's worst nightmare.

True it looks like a dream...until like most others...you put it in a home environment (where I am) 30 - 40C room temp & they start to screw up.

AMD run at higher temps & so cope with the climate here better (unless you have air-con 24/7)...Still need to take the covers off the box & leave the windows open.

I have repaired an AMD where the cpu fan had stopped for 6 weeks in summer inside an apartment...customer complained that it was getting slower. I replaced the fan & its still working now as far as I know. P? would melt & die I think.

You're talking about ancient CPUs.
The new Quad-Core Penryn has an output of 130W, and you know what? it can deal with a lot more.
150C is still a safe temp for it to work.
Although 85C is the expected temp for performance reduction.
The Nehalem CPUs are supposed to be a lot cooler, with less output.

Back in the days old K7 CPUs would have explode if you didn't cool them properly, while Netburst CPUs could handle it without a problem.

True, I haven't met any quad core yet....happy with my 64x2 for now.

The chip temp will increase though against room temp...especially if the fan stops. And of course outside of the controlled environment that all the tests are done in.

Bring on the octo-core I say :P

My workstation is based on a V8 system, which basically is a sample package of two Quad-Core Xeon X5365 CPUs and an Intel S5000XVN motherboard for reporters (it's all about connections ;)).
I'm using the stock coolers, and it's working fine for me, even at 35C-40C.
And you know what? if you can afford a $1,200 CPU, you can also afford a $50 cooling solution for it.

Now about the Octo-Core.
The Nehalem micro-architecture is a native Quad-Core chip, which means we'll see some Octo-Core MCM version of it.
Intel also resurrected the HyperThread technology, so just imagine a 16-thread machine. :)

I have to ask, but I'm not sure I really want to know :scared:

Omri are you taking over the world with that thing?

I spend $2000 on my whole workstation but it's for dragging data off broken HDD's and maintaining a few websites.

What are you up to....or is that a national secret :silenced:

I spent about $1,000 on that workstation, not including old FB-DIMMs I got from a friend and a Quadro I already had for a couple of years.
So maybe my system is worth more than yours, but I did not spent that much on it.
Half of it just free samples manufacturers send to reporters.
But that's not the computer I'm using for web surfing, music and stuff, I love it too much for me to load junk on it.
I'm using an FX-55 system for all of the 'usual' stuff.

What am I doing with it? Mostly graphics.

I don't really have scarps, maybe an old P4 or something, but I use most of my stuff.
All the rest of it is "limited edition", so I don't use it.

I don't report, but listing me as a reporter is the 'legal' way for friends of mine to give me free hardware.
Take Intel for example, their largest development center in the world (Where Centrino technology was developed, Core Duo CPUs too and so much more) is just a couple of kilometers away from me.
I know some of the engineers working there.
Back in my OC days, I would have gotten CPUs in bulk, but now it's not worth the effort.
Geeks help other geeks out, but nothing is free.
They give me a free CPU, and later they want free RAM.

My source of pride and joy is a one of a kind set of silver plated sticks of the legendary G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ memory using the myth-like Micron D9GMH chip.
That set has broken many records, and is able to produce an easy 1,400MHz frequency.
They're still in their original package.

I'm glad you liked my artwork, it means a lot. :)

The 'G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ' is the legendary one.
You can order a set right now if you want to, it doesn't cost a lot.
It's legendary because some batches used highly-bind D9GMH chips - best DDR2 chip ever.
It's also legendary because many OC records were broken using this set.
My set is a one of kind version of that memory, one with pure silver heatsinks.

I can take it out of the package, it's not that of a big deal.

I'm not much of an OC'er - recovery work is all about having the stability to notice when things are going wrong & determine why without too many variables clouding the symptoms.
All I know is when I can't play the latest FPS or Driving game online, it's time to up the system.

Pure Silver as in real Ag or alloy?

Nah, I have a great connection (something like 56 MBps...pretty good =P), but I can't understand a few things they're saying.

While we're on the subject of computers and graphics, though...

My comp is a piece of crap. A SHINY piece of crap, but one nontheless. Sure, I have tons of programs, but space? Nada. Speed? Lol, it takes me 15 minutes to reboot. Graphics? Halo can run at full...not much after that, lol.

I'm not very good with the wires, chips, and whatnot, but I'm decent with software. Should I get my computer a new graphics card (after I save for a car of course), or just get a new one?

bentalphanerd

Depends what you have there now to work with Trexxen

whats your cpu (GHz)? how much RAM? How much free space do you have?

Also a good idea to run some scans for adware & spyware maybe it'll help speed things up.
My "toolbox" page here >>LINK (http://linksdisk.alphanerdz.com/help/)<< has download link to the free Adaware & Spybot programs. Also the 'win startup editor' on the same page is good for turning off all the stuff that is trying to run everytime you start your system up (that you don't need running all the time)

Any problems please ask :)

Are we talking about bits or bytes?
If you're talking about bits, it's a pretty decent connection.
But if you're talking about bytes, it's a pretty sick connection, especially the upload rate.

Internet speed isn't really related to hardware.
Well it is to the network cards and/or I/O (such as USB and FireWire), but even the really old ones are just fine for the average connection.

EDIT:
Those 'Thoroughbred' are some of the best chips AMD has ever made.
They heat up really fast, but they are all about power. They kicked that 'Northwood' ass.

Who buys Pentium anymore?
The only Pentium chips out there are the Pentium E ones (Allendale), and they kick the cost equivalent AMD chips, well at least around here.
From my experience the prices are different from country to country, so maybe you can find even more powerful AMD chips in that price range.

For basic stuff, you don't need something better.
You can even use something older.
The new AMDs got their ass kicked, but the old ones are way better than the equivalent Intel. I just don't like Netburst CPUs.

I'm actually getting 46.6 K on my dialup here. It's like someone invented the wheel but I'm still waiting for the axle.
My boys computer went BSOD and constant auto reboot today. Didn't bring an xp cd & neither of us have a floppy drive to run drive checks from.
I slaved his off mine. copied the 'software & system file from his C:\Windows\repair folder & pasted them into his C:\WINDOWS\system32\config folder {after renaming the same name files that were there}
It booted up but lost all the drivers - a few trips through Add/Remove Hardware & told xp to auto install each one (they were still in the sys32 folder) All is working again.
Normally I'd have left it until I got home & run a repair from xp cd....but he's got all the music on his system....it was an emergency.
