day 1 start bloom cycle ...
so I will guess a date of June 1st or sooner
for a red ripe pod on the dirt planter seedling...
provideing it sets fruit at all.
This plant is about ready to switch to bloom, she will be forced at 12.5 dark and 11.5 lights on...the Pablo Plant is getting loaded with small pods and fresh flowers...sounds like a good idea to me too. ;)

the small plant above {she just got bumps this morning, thats fast } is now in with the large plant below...

aint he a stud, look at all them pods forming... Pablo

Hi stillmanz
no ,i dont remove any flowers because they tend to remove themselves readily ,so i see no need.
about the 1000 assam seeds, well no story ,
just real low germination/survival rates {about 3%}
so it took alot to get some good plants.

good luck all

Don't they know it is rude not to take your hat off in the presence of a lady?

Maybe they think I'm not lady-like enough to raise their hats :( They're stuck on solid.

*I'm not very lady-like at times, I have a dirty mind but I'm short, so maybe the song's right.

billyboy
02-18-2008, 05:46 AM
question...why do you have the plants in the cage?

They love the heat from the concrete that it sits on esp over night & my cat also loves to dig up seedlings to relieve itself hence the fort knox type cage :P

AlabamaJack
02-18-2008, 05:50 AM
Understand...

I put bird netting around my tomatoes. Two years ago, I lost about half of my tomatoes to birds....holes pecked in the tomatoes as soon as they started turning red...put the bird netting up last year and didn't lose a single tomato.

Disaster struck again. My cat knocked over my best Naga Morich, and although it may still be barely alive, its going to the compost. Of the hundreds of plants I have, he had to find the one that I was babying the most. I guess I can't blame the cat, he got locked in my plant room for a full day and it was the one day that I was ill and didn't check my plants. I also had to scoop cat shit out of one of my bigger plants. I have one decent Naga M remaining but its still way behind because of aphids. At least my Dorset Nagas are doing well.

AlabamaJack
02-21-2008, 08:21 AM

Last year I had nothing but bad luck with my Naga Morich. I dropped my best plant on the floor, it went in the compost bin but I fished it out the next day and saved it. I hardly had any fruit from it though.

It wasn't me, somebody hexed my babies! They were growing strong, thick stalked and green, then just stopped. Haven't done anything for the last two weeks. I haven't had time to fuss with them and see what's going on, but since everything else is growing fine, I'm not sure what's the problem.

AlabamaJack

Pam

maybe Stillmanz voodooed you to...

how big of a container do you have them in Pam?

One that's plenty big. It's not the light or the heat or the water or the soil or the container. Everything else is growing great guns. What I'm afraid is that I let the competitive spirit override my better judgment and I fertilized them too soon. The only other thing I did differently is soak some of the seeds. I don't usually do that, and I did soak some of them in that Superthrive, only it's all the Nagas, not just the ones I soaked.

I need to get organized and go over my notes. And find my camera.

AlabamaJack
02-21-2008, 08:03 PM
hmmmmm...don't know then, you know I have been fertilizing mine with a very mild mixture and they are going great guns...matter of fact, I will probably have to transplant out of the 6" pots into something bigger next week...I can see roots starting to show in the holes in the bottom...I am stumped...

stillmanz
02-24-2008, 01:48 AM
I wasn't kidding, I like all thing calypso....lol

My plants are stunted too, I almost killed them when we went away, I'm thinking I will plant them in the garden and forget about them. They always do better if I ignore them.
The dog almost killed the 7 pot Bent gave me so I planted it in the Trinidad garden and now it going great guns again... go figure

I got this stuff at the local Hydroponics store. One of the guys that works there used to work for Botanicare I think and was doing some research on growing peppers with this fertilize. The photos he showed me convinced me it was good enough to try. As long as I have the results I am having with it I will use it. It is expensive....about 19 dollars a bottle but you only use at most 2 Tbsp per gallon for mature plants.

LUCKYDOG
02-26-2008, 01:38 PM
I bought a pound to try that alone was close to 18$ with shipping. You mix 1- 1 1/4 tsp per gallon of water so I figured I would have enough to get an idea of how its working.

It was either 15$ in gas in my truck to get there or 5$ for them to deliver. No brainer unless I was really impatient

man my plants look sad compaired to this..

Not as sad as mine. I seem to have completely jinxed myself here.

I noticed some small flies in the house, so I put up some yellow sticky traps around the Nagas. Now they're (the sticky traps) covered with these small flies. I took each cup and gently washed the seedling with Safer Soap, then rinsed them just in case there was some other uggy buggy I was missing. Well, they look happier now, BUT THEY"RE STILL NOT GROWING!

Everything else is doing fine. I've been transplanting lettuce this week, and I'll be transplanting tomatoes this weekend. The other peppers were planted about a month later, but they look fine.

I think AJ is some kind of plant incubus and is sucking the life from my plants to nourish his own!

'slurrrrrrrrrrrrppppppppp'....

they have grown about 3 to 4 inches since their 2 month birthday on 01 March...they were about 16" tall then, now they are about 20-21" tall.....that is an 18"/45cm ruler standing in the plant.

It seems that ol' southern lousiana woman knew what she was talking about...but geez, she was dressed really funny with a bone in her hair...think it was a chicken bone...

Here goes...whether you want it or not...here is how I am growing my Nagas.....
I have posted all products and "treatments" I have given them...but I fertilize every watering according to the botanicare instructions. The feed I am giving them is 1/2 Tbsp of the botanicare prow grow and/or bloom depending on the age of the plant, 2 1/2 Tbsp peroxide, and 16 drops Superthrive per gallon of water. I feed them when the lower leaves start to droop, usually about 40 hours...Thats what they eat and how often....I run a fan on them twice a day for thirty minutes...the fan is now set on high. They are kept at 80F (27C) and lights now on 16/8...lights used are a 6500K and a 4100K T12 40 Watt bulbs in each shop fixture (4 fixtures total but they get the best light from 2)....and mylar coating all sides of the grow box except the plywood platforms I have them sitting on.....

thanks guys,
on another note, I hobbled out to the farm yesterday and to my surprise, about 50% of the Bhut Jolokia seed I made in 07 have germinated.
estimate is about 100+seedlings so far, with more to come up hopefully.
Im pleased with this to no end,and will keep about 20% of the best plants to produce pure seed, and the remaining seedlings will be sold at the farmers market.
what you guys think a Bhut Jolokia seedling would be worth if you could find one?
(about a 6 inch seedling when ready for sale)
Ive seen them listed anywhere from 3.00us to 15 euros overseas...
let me know what you think is a fair market price.

Potawie, your plants may be squat, but they dang sure look healthy..

let me ask you all a question...before I started hardening off my nagas, they were starting to produce flowers and I had two flowers open...but when they were moved inside and back outside several times, they stopped with the flower bud production....I have had them back in my grow box now for about 10 days and they have started producing more flower buds...

Do you think the shock of real sunshine caused the rapid decline in flower bud production?

I bring plants in and out all the time and haven't noticed any change in flower development but its possible since the change in environment could be stressing them.

My guess would be the temperature change from inside under a light to outside where it still may be a bit cool.

Looking at where we are at with it, those Nagas of mine have been neglected big time, I started them off in canna coco, then they all got put into soil, then I decided I would use the cheapest coco bricks I could find from different sources and put a few of each back into some cheap and nasty coco, I also put 2 into good old potting mix, I have only fertilized my plants once, about 10 days ago.

The major advantage Ive had is having the sun on them. :)

Remember that Billy boy is using hydro, and we split the contest into two groups so dirt growers wouldn't be competing with hydro folks. We expected the hydro folks to jump out in front.

Pam

I'm thinking, after what I've found, that I'm going to take a couple of my sad little Nagas and remove all the seed starting mix with the potentially auxin-inhibiting mycorrhizae. I'm put them in a bucket of water and gently wash away all of the soil, then replant. It may not help if some of the mycorrhizae have formed a symbiosis with the roots already, but I'm going to give it a try.

billyboy
03-31-2008, 09:24 AM
Remember that Billy boy is using hydro

Yep I started my babies in coco using coco nutes for a good month, but after that stage my hydro techniques ceased. I dont care what way you classify my grow technique with my contest Nagas, but Im calling it neglected & what your seeing with those contest Nagas is definately not how I would grow them Hydroponically :P

I don't know what has spurred the nagas to grow but they have started putting on new flower buds again...and a lot of them...somewhere around 70 I think...shots of a couple...most are 3 bud groups...

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/96/nagabuds040108wx0.jpg

Picture showing new growth of Nagas...I know it is hard to see but if you look at the photo I posted with "me and my nagas" above you can see the new light green growth...over an inch, maybe two..

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/3875/040108nagabuds004dt2.jpg

Now, question is what caused this growth spurt...they are back in my grow box and have been for about two weeks...I added the 15K+ lumens of 2700K light at the time I moved them back in the box and then last Thursday I started giving them Botanicare Liquid Karma...

Whatever is causing the growth spurt, I am happy...

I think adding cytokinin to the mix helped.

I've watered my Nagas with the Superthrive a second time I'm so convinced that the lack of auxin, for whatever reason, is the problem. I pulled my plants out of the tray they're in last night, and these 2 and 3 inch plants have roots crowding out of 16 oz cups.

I think a side-by-side of out plants would have made a good textbook picture of auxin extremes.

Actually, I'm adding auxin, because it's probably excess cytokinin production in the mycorrhizae in the seed starting mix. You're the one who needed cytokinin so your plants would start to branch more.

Mine, after 2 1/2 months of doing nothing, are growing normally now. They're going up and branching. The Puppy Au Pair was over today to help me clean (she's a slave driver!) and we decluttered the right stack. I have the camera! The batteries are charging, so you can see what I'm talking about as soon as I get some pictures made.

if i had to guess id estimate about 15-20 lbs on the vine now per plant at 500 plants thats 7500-10,000 lbs green maters...

and for anyone interested in the contest,I have a red pod,but its not a full size pepper so i wont count it,but i also have 2 other pods that are half red and should be donr by may?...pictures at 11

Whats BB up to?

Ive got no sign of red yet, but my pods are looking good, went out early this morning for a look saw one with a hole in it & picked it off & a dirty big pod eating grub was inside it, also spotted a currawong eating one of my ripe Nagas off one of my dirt plants, the cheeky bird just stood there trying to eat the pod all the while I was yelling & pretending to throw rocks at it, I must of made an impression, as it just stood there bashing the pod against the ground with its beak! Then flew off, leaving a battered ripe pod to rot on the ground.

Ill take so pictures tomorrow afternoon & post to show where Im at.

hi Pam and all,
Im new here and was reading your contest of sorts. I have a few Bhut Jolokia Seeds and a couple mature plants. is it ok if i just take a cutting on the first and enter it as an honorable mention. not to compete with the seedlings of course.hope to absorb some good information from you guys n gals in the future for growing some super hot chilis.

happy holidays

Sure, as long as you are prepared for lots of trash talk about your "cheating" if you get a ripe pod before us seeders. *grin*

If you're interested in Naga seeds, Peppermania http://www.peppermania.com/home.html now has Nagas, and they ship internationally.

You should do a video eating that tiny red one. :mouthonfire:
yes they are from the CPI, but they are not what you could buy.
My plants come from the original Assam seed used to produce the test plants.
the seed sold to the public is several generations from what I grow.
no need for me to do a video, we all know their hotter than hell
my favorite way to use these is to deseed the pods and dry them out, then i usually take a half pod to a pizza or 5 lbs of meat and just add the chile before cooking, this will be as hot as most could handle, any hotter and your taste buds wont work, and the experience would go from fun to miserable.
I do like to taste what I eat,not just burn.
anyone that has ever eaten one knows first hand that the heat builds long after the pepper is gone.

Great looking Bhuts Pablo...

thanks aj,

Pablo's the "cheating" winner ;)
hi rainbowberry,
no cheating here,
I planted my seed on the 1st like everyone else,

For everyone,
something I did do was to force the plant indoors,by manupilateing the photoperiod.
fed with the correct nutrient mix to produce Pods
not seed,
with held water at the end for rapid ripening effect,
without the bumble bees working the flowers it is very likely that I would not even have a pollenated flower,so moveing it into the greenhouse with the climate control and bees made all the difference.

If I had "cheated" and used a mature plant or a clone from pablo or rose,
then this contest would have ended in march instead of may.
as far as Naga Morich or Bhut Jolokia...well anyone who has read this entire thread knows how i feel about the differences between the two...
there is no difference in the genotype
only the phenotype has some difference...just like my plants.
Pablo carries the Naga Phenotype pod and
Rose and a few others carrie the Indian Bih phenotype pod.
and fyi... Pablo,Rose and Contest Plant all came from the
very same Pepper POD...not just the same seed,
if I grow only pablo's seed and continue that line thru selective breeding, the pepper pods will become more consistant in appearance, but the genectics will never change unless a different Chile Strain is introduced, thus creating an F1 hybrid.
which btw i will attempt this year
by doing an open Fatalii/Bhut Jolokia pollenation.
this will yield 4 possibilities in the resulting seed.
1. Pure Fatalli
2. Pure Bhut Jolokia
3. Fatalii Pod pollenated by Bhut Pollen
4. Bhut Pod pollenated by Fatalii Pollen
so i may have some seed to experiment with this fall.
be nice and open minded and maybe Ill send some out to those who can actually grow it.
its been fun guys n gals... and dont take things so seriously...
there is always someone who is more experienced...
as for me,
Im just beginning to learn about peppers...
my personal favorite plant is better discussed in private...

ya mon!
