hi billyboy
lets see, I use 16oz solo cups, poke a hole in the side about 1/2 inch from bottom of cup, fill cup with peralite/vermiculite mix, poke a hole in medium with a pencil, cut trim clones and dip in rooting gel, place in cup and cover with a clear plastic cup for a humidity dome, place on heating mat and wait.
what your useing now, coco is probably one of the best choices for a medium,Im just kinda cheap so i buy bulk peralite and vermiculite...and mix it myself.

What sort of lighting do you give your cuttings?
Hi POTAWIE
compact fluroescent bulbs, cool white bulbs/tubes do very well for seedlings/cuttings/vegetive small plants.
the ones I have now can be found at wally world ,23 watts each @ 1600 lumens..I use 5 in my small little grow box
so 115 watts at 8000 lumens in an area 36"x 30"x24" .
these bulbs are cheap and have a life of 10,000 hours .
Id much rather have a 4' 8 bulb T5..
but i dont have that much to spend.

Ok, and how close are your cuttings to the light? Just wodering how much light is needed in the cloning stage.

hi POTAWIE
they are about 10-12 inches below the bulbs,I dont think very much light is needed to root plants. more important is the warm temps and high humidity. I think a shop light with good grow bulbs would be fine for cuttings or seedlings.
However ,if you grow alot of seedlings and plant a large garden ,you might consider something brighter.

Congrats on the sprout AJ:)
Ive just finished building my very own aeroponic cloning station its small scale (20 litre bucket), fits 7 cuttings its up & running! Ive already taken a few Naga cuttings & they are in it now, its a bit of an experiment, Ive gone 10 liters of rainwater with a few drops of supathrive didnt touch the ph I guess it would be around 7ish didnt use any rooting gel or the likes just stuck em in the cut pool noodle discs, the aero thingy will run 24/7 till good roots appear, & the lighting will be on 16 hours. Looking for quick healthy growth of roots
Ill post a pic later, its time I get some shut eye:halo:

I haven the vague-iest, I was looking at an easy setup that I found with styrofoam coolers -- a Cooler Float Grower and some Flourescent lights -- give it a test... also I have found a DIY Aeroponic grower that would hold up to 40 plants for less than 100$ --- The cooler is obviously cheaper.

couldn't get neem oil yesterday and forgot about the camomile tea...just went to walmart to get neem oil and they don't have it...I will get it from my local nursery today...in the mean time I just sprinkled some cornmeal on the soil....do you know the mechanics of why the cornmeal works? what does that do ?

No, I've just read several articles about it working. Some people use it on their skin for mystery rashes and the like. I know it's very trendy in green circles to use corn meal to suppress weed growth on your lawn. You put it on in the spring for the weeds, and as it decomposes it adds nitrogen to the soil. I've tried in on my lawn, and it did work, but it was too expensive to get it from the lawn care folks. I never tracked down a feed store or some place that might sell it cheap.

That is the first time I have ever heard of using cornmeal...my grandmother used to use corn starch on me when I had heat rash under my arms in the summer time...wonder if corn starch would work like corn meal?
I just started another blog with pics for the Naga Contest..

woohoo go BB. Don't hold your breath tho...I'm still waiting for pods from mine & I planted it in March '07
hi bentalphanerd,
I just read thru this.
what seems to be the problem your haveing with the jolokia not bearing fruit?
1.no flowers?
2.flowers form ,but drop off after they open.
3.flowers not produceing visible pollen?
4.flowers form, pollenation occurs but small fruit drops off immature?
the more detail you can give ,the better i can help with this, maybe.
most problems occur when
1.too much /not enough nitrogen in soil
2.night time temps fall out of optimum range 85f>>65f ideal night
3.humidity too low/dry climate...50%>>70% is optimum for the jolokia
4.PH imbalance/nutrient lock out
5.day time temps too hot/cold
6.photoperiod is interupted or not optimum to trigger plant response.
7.Sterility...quite common
{normally due to improper nutrient levels}
NMSU.CPI has some very detail grow data for the jolokia and has nutrient amounts for pod production and certified seed production...each requires specific nutrient amounts for proper growth .
i hand pollenated my plants, one produced pods and one did not.

what is really amaizeing is the fact that both my plants came from same exact chili pod but yet they show Phenotypical differences...
one is lighter green with green branches,
the other is much darker green with purple branches...same seed, same pod,
same GenoType...different PhenoType
which is typical of a Landrace that is not commercially cultivated...
this will change IMO since these are now being grown in mass numbers in many countrys.

hi bentalphanerd,
I just read thru this.
what seems to be the problem your haveing with the jolokia not bearing fruit?
pablo
was Operator error Pablo. I started them just before our (very mild) winter. I accidently mixed some green fertilizer into their pots. I planted it out at the start of spring & it came back well & was just starting to flower when I went on holiday. Came home no flowers, no pods & half the leaves eaten by something.
Lots of new growth on it now. Waiting for new flower buds. I'm confident of getting a pod from it before '09

ya man, I understand that. we have some voracious insects around these parts too. last season I had some giant aphids that just chewd the heck outta my tomatoes and peppers. I got the buggers later though ,roetenone/pyrethrum, its organic and degrades quickly...spray the buggers at night and count the little green bodies in the morning ...

I transplanted mine out of the 9 oz cups to 6" pots today because they were having issues with mold. The inside of the cup was lined with it. I carefully took them out of the smaller cups, doused them with cornmeal, put cornmeal on top of the potting soil in the bottom of the cup, filled sides with soil and watered them in.
We will see how well this cornmeal works. They are in sick bay right now.

Oy. About two weeks ago, my heat cut out...so now it's a balmy ~20 degrees in my house most of the time. I was going to get them started indoors, but now that's not looking safe for the plants - we had some other houseplants that we were growing to test the setup we had (it was directly in sunlight from a window, heated via a vent), but since our heat's been gone not a single one of those plants looks like it's going to make it. So, I'll likely be off to a much later start...but don't count me out just yet. ^.~

Now you can't really see it there but that 'hedge' (yup from one end of the pic to the other) is covered in pods of all stages of ripeness & flowers & flower buds. He was trying to complain about having to get into it & cut back some branches....yer, that would be hell wouldn't it, having to cut back your million scovie plants because they were too bushy  lucky talented $@#%
They're in small pots too. Some of the lower leaves were easily 10" x 6", dark green, lush. I want to live inside that grow hut BB, just me & my BBQ & enough vindaloo to see me through about 2 weeks, then there'd be nothing left
Thanks for the beer & plant (choc hab with pods....does this guy know how to bribe a judge or what! {hope you're all taking notes})...all the great pods to throw on my dinner woohoo & a few dried nagas for sauce experiments.

Thanks Stillz...they looked pretty pitiful last week when I transplanted and they had that mold/fungus but it looks like the cornmeal trick worked so far. They are being given a steady diet of Botanicare Pure Blend Progro every time they get water. I received my order for SUPERthrive yesterday and will be adding it to the fertilize solution. If they are anything like the Red Savinas that are two weeks older, they should take off any day now. The Red Savinas are two weeks older and probably 20 cm tall. One thing I noticed is where I trimmed the lower leaves off, new growth is already a cm long and another thing, the leaves are not symetric...is that common for Naga plants?

:)almost AJ.. if you ignore the first three that are not fully showing in the picture, one of the TS is the first on the left, I have 9 in total in there! the others are out of view.
Im thinking the Nagas are to go outside transplanted into soil, and Ill be doing the Trinidad Scorpions inside fully under my Hydro Lights etc system. The TS will be my pet project for the coming months. Ive started a few of my plants like this, coco then to dirt & they love it, I have some awesome looking Datil plants happening atm which had the same beginnings as the Nagas pictured, weve got a good three months of prime growing weather here yet:)

They all look very healthy...
I have about 6 weeks before I transplant outside into containers. St Patricks day is March 17th and that is the average last frost date here in Fort Worth. In the mean time, I have a lot of work to do getting ready....irrigation system setup, bed preparation for veggies, and setting up something to sit all my containers on. I have a six foot tall wooden pricacy fence across the back of my lot and am going to replace 10 eight foot sections. I am going to cut enough of the eight foot sections into 2 foot wide pieces, lay them end to end for a row that is 48 feet long. I will have 6 of these rows. The very back of my yard slopes downward to my house so each row will be a little higher than the next when I finish (at least that is the plan now).....
sorry, I got to rambling....

Pablo, AJ, looking very nice, wish I had those sort of results using soil!
thanks billy...your plants are looking real nice too mate.
my personal feelings on soil...
Its all about the roots
I think if problems from soil arrise, its usually because the soil is too wet, this for the most part will create many secondary problems ,like disease.
If you like to reuse your medium ...try adding hygrozyme ...it does work very well, albeit like gold for expense, and smells like sour mash whiskey...but Ive never had a sick plant useing it,and it will prolong the medium by keeping it pathogen free, like pythium for example.yield is increased ,simply because a healthy plant will out yield a sick one, even if the sickness is not apparent to the eye...
I think i may have some fruit set next week ,Pablo Plant was kicking out the pollen today and I had my Q-tip working over time ...LOL

hello everybody
well I got peppers...
the older soil plant from last season has begun to set fruit,
I just checked and it looks to be alot ,lol.
I will continue to act as a bee and fiddle the flowers with my trusty Q-Tip...this is where it gets tricky indoors...
hmmm ,do I just add water,or should I use a mild bloom nutrient?
the soil is fortified with SBG,Kelp Meal, two table spoons MBG.
also I use a supplemental liquid Meta K sometimes.
Foxfarm TigerBloom and BigBloom are the primary nutrients.
also at my disposal is FF Beastie Bloomz as a booster late into bloom.
Last but very important ,I add 5ml Hygrozyme per gallon of finished mix,adjust PH to 6 and Wapa!{george lopez}
or
I can just continue to use ph adjusted water only.
what ya think?

Meta K is a liquid organic source of Potassium,
Tigerbloom and Big Bloom are liquid complete hydro/organic based nutrients.
Hygrozyme is an OMRI approved Organic enzyme that feeds on dead and dieing plant material, releaseing back into soil ,nutrients that plants can take up,it also kills dangerous things like pythium and prevents damping off in seedlings.
Nice looking plant BTW.

ya jack ,I think your best bet would be go to a Hydro store as they will carry the sunleaves line of guanos, these are the best source and very consistant...also one Im out of that I need to replace soon is
Jamaican Bat Guano...great for bloom ,aroma and flavor of your favorite greens...

McKinney...sure I have been to Mckinney...friends live there...it is a long way for me...I live due west of downtown Fort Worth about 10 miles...
When ever you get back to Tejas, let me know and we can tip a couple of shiner's together...
you gotta give Romo a little slack Pablo....he is still a "mere child"...a rich one albeit but still a child...he will mature with age...

Hi stillmanz,
there should be no problem forceing bloom at any time really.
Bhut Jolokia is a long season variety, meaning 100+ days from pod set. Like most long season varieties,it will mature before it sets flowers,no matter what the photoperiod. the main problem is the roots, the plant needs to grow enough roots to support a heavy pepper laden plant. You could grow these plants from seed germination at a 12/12 photoperiod with no adverse affects, just a small plant. As soon as the small plant shows a flower,i will start the 100 day clock and see where we are when that day rolls around.

so if youget theyoungerplant to bloom you would allow one or two pods to form and pick the new flowers off toallow it tousemostof its energy on the pod? thats if you were in an international first pod comp hyperthethically lol.
I've seen my small hydro fatalii go into early bloom I usually just flick the flowers off.
well my nagas arevery healthy but way behind the leaders I'm just pickin uptips from here lol.

Thanks for the vote of confidence mate,
but Billy is gonna win,if all things equal, hydro will win everytime.
well really the actual race is still at the starting line, since this is a seedling Im competeing with,it has yet to prove itself as a fertile plant,I have two mature plants same as my Pablo, and neither has yet to produce any peppers and they are both two years old, like my Pablo plant. so until someone actually has a pollenated flower and fruit set,we all are in the same boat.
ya know me and my friend from nmsu ,planted about 1000 of the original assam seed to get pablo,so hes kinda special. a real stud ya know. so if I get these other 4 new seedlings from the same old assam seed as Pablo to produce like him ,then I will be very happy.soon I need to do Fatalii and make some wicked hybrids.I just have not decided on where to get the seed,I need the land race generation of seed, not a maybe pure seed.
maybe I can source some from cpi. ;)
hang in there folks ,this is only just beginning to get started.

Hi DD,
Here is my ace in the hole should Billy get his groove on good hehe...
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/4906/pabloclonecchinesejacqiq9.jpg
This is a clone of my Pablo seed plant and is a genectic copy, identical to the big one makeing peppers now, also Pablito is already proven and same age as papa...so he will bloom at the snap of the lights.
He is rooted into a soiless mix of coco fibre/peralite/vermiculite and fed mostly ph water, with just a touch of Foxfarm Hydro Organic as per FF mixing chart.
as i said in the beginning I wanted to try both soil and hydro.
so when billy snaps his indoor hydro into gear I will start pablito...if I did him now,it would not be a fair race.
its alot of fun to reap what you sow,
my grandparents are to thank for my green thumbs...
bless them both.

Guys n Gals, Ive had a switch of plan with my coco Nagas, as Ive got 9 seedlings of T. Scorpions up they will be given the royal treatment ie, in the Hydro room. All my Nagas are now currently outside and in 4 inch pots sitting in potting mix, I have kept 2 Bhut Jolokias in coco which will go under the lights till the first fork appears then they are going outside in my "Naga Hut" so they will be full hydro. Ive done this type of growing before, (starting in coco then to potting mix) and have fantastic results my Datils which were started this way 2 months ago already have their first open flowers formed & look awesome (I must post a pic of them).
Pablo thanks for your confidence in me, but the others are very experienced growers so dont count them out either. For me its going to be interesting to see how the dirt nagas compare to the coco bhuts, but alas my new love is with the T.Scorpions :)
Hope everyones plants are coming along nicely.

So pablo have you found productivity in plants varies seed to seed?
I've noticed it in Devils tongues (fatalii type chinenses)
some plants grow hard out and produce early others are stunted and struggled grown in same conditions. weird
Is there more story to the thousand assam seeds?
