View Full Version : Bird/Habs - seeds nearly ready, Who wants?

I've been playing with a cross between a Malawi Birdseye & Yellow Hab over the last year {bird/hab}. I'm up to 3rd generation adding more Hab each time.
It puts out very small violently hot pods. Very few flowers, even fewer pods, then they take 6 odd weeks to turn red & another 3 weeks after that on the plant to get the full heat. Best plant I have has reached all of 3" high & 5" across.
Would make a good winter indoor pet, I should have about 30 to 50 seeds available in the next month. Anyone looking for a small violent pet with growth issues ?

Hey bent,
It would be great to have a picture of the hybrid and of the parents also.
These would be great for my indoor garden.
Sounds very interesting I'll send you a PM later.

The early ones were coming out all sorts of shapes & sizes:
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/122/image004crpvd7.th.jpg....... (http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image004crpvd7.jpg)http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/7446/image003crpoj0.th.jpg...... The latest are getting a more uniformed 'squared' shape.
Still want more Hab in them though :onfire:

Just opened the first ripe one & wow, 10 whole seeds lol (3 to 5 is the norm)
I'll dry them off a bit and send 5 a piece to Omri & QuebecFire next week.
Yay! I'll be making an army of those. :hell:
Thanks, and be sure I'll call them "Bent's Birdhabs".

hey bent, I picked three fat little pods of the birdhab you gave me at Byron - they're a chocolatey-browny-reddy colour. I can't wait to eat them!!!
bentalphanerd
11-23-2007, 04:39 AM
they will turn a bright red in time...about 3 weeks after that they hit their peak heat. It is an evil little plant that makes you wait & wait & wait....
It has issues.
chilliman64
11-23-2007, 05:46 AM
they're currently sitting in a bowl in the kitchen where they will stay until they turn red, or else!
btw, I'm making some more jerky this weekend. I'm trying a thicker cut of meat but the same basic recipe for now. if it works ok I'll send you some. if it works out really well I'm gonna eat it all myself ;)

They are truly pathetic to look at Omri. I have a plant in the ground for a year & still only 3" high. Do your nerd best with it, there must be a way to produce these tasty pods better.
I'm thinking of crossing it with a Naga. :P

Its a little hussy - i think it will jump anything you put in front of it.
What about some Trinidad Scorpion? it'll give it the nice firm look.
bentalphanerd
11-23-2007, 08:11 AM
I'm thinking if you can cross it to produce more pods faster would be a better angle, but go the way that feels good to for you. They your plants now. :)
But I'm asking for your advice.
So what would you say about Pequin? or maybe large Congo Habanero, it is supposed to be VERY productive and it will probably give it bigger pods and overall size.

I'm not sure how to say it, but your 'birdhabs' are scaring me. They grow all weird and uneven.
Just so you won't blame it on the "half leaf falling off" thing, that's the one that was intact.
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/896/birdhabah8.jpg
One leaf is long, one is short. one goes this way, the other goes that way, and you know what? they don't even grow in pairs, it's like one leaf at a time.
To be honest, that just makes want to taste the pods even more.

hahaha - i tried to tell you. Even the best ones I have are scraggly & pathetic. sometimes some pods grow upwards too although the 3rd generation seems to be more stable that way.

Omri, the pods from this plant are really tasty! Bent sent me one in a trade a while back, Ive yet to grow the seed but the pod was yummy thats for sure, it looks like youve got them under control in the growing department:)
The sad thing is that the plants are four days already without any light, because the damn light bulb stopped working.
They survived thanks to almost none-existent sunlight.
So if my plant looks too healthy, you're doing something seriously wrong.
BTW go take a look at the 'last spicy meal' thread. :)

hey everyone. Its looking like the 3rd gen have crossed with Siam making them a stronger more viable plant. i was hoping for a 3rd Hab cross but am happy the plant looks more stable.
If any have sprouted for you please post some pics here. I'd like to see how they're working out.
Thanks
They're growing insanely fast.
Just two days ago the biggest one had just a few leaves, now it has 13 sets of leaves.
I won't be surprised if that number will double itself in a couple of days.
You made one heck of a plant there Bent, good job. ;)

The proof of good pepper plant or unworthy only comes with a nice fresh red ripe pod...and the devouring of it.
A good plant, yes Im happy it made that cross even if it was accidental. A good pepper who knows. Can always drop back to Generation 2 seeds & try again, but I think it'll work out fine.
would like to see the others though & see if they all got that Siam in them. Easy way to tell is they get a real dark spot near where the branches join the stem. And leaves larger than 1 CM would also be unusual.

Yep I have dark joins, and the leaves are more than 1cm (more like 5cm).
Guess I won't have the little plants I hoped.

mine is flowering at 12 cm high, so they still wont be big plants. Leaves are 3 to 4 cm. Its definitely a healthier looking plant than the previous versions.
You see, four out of five seedlings lost their first leaf, and because of that they grew slower than the one that stayed intact.
That one is just a bit over 12cm, so I guess it'll be flowering real soon.
I think I'll just call them 'BHS' (Birdseye, Habanero, Siam). it's easier to say (and write) than 'Birdhabiam'.

yeah - i haven't had any new ripe pods since we got all that rain, so no seeds of the birdhab.
I do have a few birdhabiam seeds now lol
Can you at least share the size? I mean, mine were around 15cm/6" tall. do they get a lot taller, if at all?
There's a chance you developed a new mini-plant. :D
Birdhabiam is hot?

>>Runs outside & grabs a pod>>
:munch munch:
Not as hot as I'd like. It'd be considered hot to some. i've got a little birdhabiam in a pot in the middle of my Hab hedge so the next cross should bring it back again.
It is a much more stable plant though...the original birdhab is still only 4 or 5" tall & it would be around a year old lol
Dude, you could sell these.
bentalphanerd
03-25-2008, 07:42 PM
Dude, you could sell these.
right now i think that'd just lead to a lot of complaints. I'd just like to get them more stable & have more Hab flavour in there. I figure thats going to take at least 3 more generations.
You do what you need to do, but little tiny and mature plants would go off the shelves! a little something you can put under your kitchen window and pick chiles from whenever you cook. like Doctor Who usually say; "Brilliant!".
bentalphanerd
03-25-2008, 07:47 PM
lol yeah thats why i offered them out - thought of everyone here stuck indoors all winter without fresh pods...it was an act of mercy lol.
If you make them hot AND tasty, than you got a winner. I'd probably give it a proper name, though. I still have my good ol' Galore idea - "Rectal Burn".

I remember mine having flowers, but it was a while back and it kinda died.
Looks like a very cool plant, kinda bushy too.
Here's a question. if it has Chinense and Frutescens genes, and now some Annuum as well, will it produce seeds? usually too complicated crosses don't produce seeds. just like with POTAWIE's scorpion-bell cross.
bentalphanerd
03-25-2008, 09:36 PM
The first 2 crosses only had about 3 seeds per pod. The latest one has gone up to 10. Just keeping the fingers crossed on all of that.
You'll see it has the small leaves (about 1 cm) & yet its as strong as the ones with dark joins (obviously Siam). is it possible to only get a little of the cross characteristics?
Do you look exactly like one of your parents and nothing like the other? :P

pm me your address talas. The list is getting kind of long so it's going to be a while. May even be a new generation out by then.
The birdhabiam i stuck under the habs has flowered. I ripped a hab flower off & rubbed it in. Another of the birdhabiams has put out a few of the short rounded pods, so seed production should step up again soon.
