View Full Version : YOU ARE MISSING SOMETHING HERE

With all due respect, this forum is lacking! I feel like I can say this because I belong also to homebrew.com, which is the exact same format and probably hosted by the exact same people.
On that site if someone has a problem, 8 people are there to leave a reply within the hour. It may just be "sorry, I have no idea how to help" but you would not have 20 views and no one leave a comment.
You get what you give. If you all want this to be a resource of extensive knowledge, you have to get your hands dirty.
If you want it to be all pretty pictures of pepper plants and "look at my garden!" so be it. God forbid you ever get a batch of bad potting soil (at Lowe's Homecenter, I can't be the only one shopping there!)and all of your peppers are infected with a "wilt problem" (if you can even find my post you will be impressed with the overwhelming lack of responses), because you won't find help here.
Sorry to sound bitter, but I could not believe my good luck when I found this site. It looked just like homebrew.com. I guess I should not have assumed!
Does home brewed beer make people more caring than hot peppers? Now that I have said that, it may be true that it does. But that aside, this site could be the incredible tool that that site is.
I could type in on homebrew.com that I have a wilt disease on my pepper plants, AND I GUARANTEE I WOULD GET BETTER RESPONSES THAN I DID HERE ON A HOT PEPPER SITE!!!!!! You are not obligated to help your fellow chile lovers, but don't you want them to be there for you? Don't you want your plants to be as healthy as possible? Be Selfish!! Make this site great!! I am sure most of you are great people, and I am sure i have pissed some of you off, but that was not my intent. Thank you! (I did find some great info elsewhere on fusarium wilt disease if anyone needs it!)
As someone else who is fairly new to this site, I would suggest that if the intent of your post here is to get people to respond to your HELP questions, I would not insult them and the site. I personally did not see the post you are mentioning, but then again, I may have but not read it as I am not a grower. I do know that you are right about one thing these are a great bunch of people that do not owe anyone anything. We come together here to share stories, pictures, jokes, jabs, etc. Sure there are some threads that involve help for growing problems, but this is not soley based on that. If you feel that you got bad soil at Lowes maybe you should have called them to blow off steam rather than insult and attack a bunch of people you don't know. Better yet, I am assuming here that you are a homebrewer by the many references you made to that site. DRINK SOME & RELAX a bit.
You diagnosed you own problem as fusarium wilt. You already know there's no treatment for the plants and about solarizing the soil.
What other information were you looking for?
I could type in on homebrew.com that I have a wilt disease on my pepper plants, AND I GUARANTEE I WOULD GET BETTER RESPONSES THAN I DID HERE ON A HOT PEPPER SITE!!!!!!
Well, they probably haven't been rectal probed by imaguitargod's aliens yet. I've been saying it for years, but it bears repeating; nothing gets your mind off Fusarium Wilt like a good good rectal probing by our Alien Overlords.

I have never had a problem with fusarium wilt so I'm not going to waste people's time with a lame response. If that's what you want is a bunch of people responding just to say they can't help you, then I'll post a comment.

I find that my questions get answered or commented on just fine. This is my first time as a container gardener. I grew up on a farm and nature just did it's thing. I've never grown peppers or anything else for that matter in a pot. As far as not leaving a reply to your wilt question.. I wouldn't know Fusarium Wilt from Wilt Chamberlin. Never heard of it. If I don't know or cannot interject something relevant I keep my mouth shut (or try to any way).
I enjoy seeing other peoples gardens and comparing notes. If this was a scientific forum I wouldn't have joined. I'm an I.T. Professional not a Gardening Professional (nor do I want to be).
Do things get off subject? Yup.
That's what happens when people talk to each other and express their views an opinions.
It's all fun stuff.

Excellent answers all. I especially agree that there may be far fewer people here in this community. That should have occurred to me.
I apologize to anyone offended.
Believe it or not, it does help if somone does at least say that they sympathize, even if they can't help. It is not necessary, but it is better than nothing.
What drove the most was a certainty that having gotten this problem from a major supply....supplier, I was under the assumption that I could not be the only one here to ever see this problem. But it is possible! I apologize again, and for what it is worth, "Mycostop", a beneficial bacteria product, sounds like the best bet for a fix. Thanks for every reply. sincerely!

I agree! you've only been a member for a short while, though I don't know how long you were a guest for. soak up the ambience, make friends, have fun. it's not fair to be so critical until you've been here for awhile. remember, this is not a specialist gardeners forum, though the majority of members do grow their own. we are just a bunch of chileheads getting together to talk about chile-related stuff. a home-brew site would naturally attract homebrewers - see the difference?
enjoy!

On this forum I think there is a wealth of knowledge over a wide range of topics that many are all too willing to make helpful suggestions and comments. In the Lounge, I can talk about any subject. Guitars, amps, video games, computers, movies, even general silliness like rectal probing by aliens! (Sorry IGG, didn't know you were serious about the probing.) Great folks here from all over the world. Give'm a chance. One last thang' Don't mess with Texas!!

Casually skimming this forum has netted me good practical info from chile growers and food biz folk great and small. I can compare my efforts with people who are at the hobby stage like me and (hopefully) gain some wisdom from larger commercial farmers or manufacturers (thanx Defcon, et al). I have had specific questions answered or been referred to good sources. The threads stay pretty much on topic and there's areas to chat it up if that's yalls thang. Sooooooooooooooo.................
Look at my garden, have a beer, eat a coupla brats with fatali horseradish mustard, chat it up with Chatty Magee, Check out the primo meat porn (fortheluvofsainttchristopherlookatthemeatporn!),f ind a business plan that works(maybe!), havanuthabeer, an' I'll tell ya all about St. Louis BBQ, nothing about fusarium wilt, and more than you wanna know about Les Pauls.......................................

yea stay around & give this site a chance. you'll get the help if someone knows how to solve the problem, & sometimes its just a waiting game to get the answers - be patient.
IMO part of the reason for not get a answer within 1 hour has to do with all the lurkers here. I mean if you had more people that visit this site take part in it you'd get more people that'd reply to your questions, which also would mean more posts being made making more people coming here to visit & read the posts more often.
this next part is for THP or ?
1st I'll say this is a great forum, but from reading this thread I was thinking since this forums setup allows you to have "sub forums" within a thread section. why not make a couple new "sub forums" in this "hot pepper" section or make new sections ?
Ex.
- bug/disease/virus section
- talk about certain strains section. Ex. white bullet, bulgarian carrot,nagas,etc.. where people have questions about just one kind of chile or would like to see pics of that kind of chile.
it seems like these 2 kinds of topics have many threads, some have multi threads dealing with the same thing. & in general people tend not waste time for searching through several pages to get a answer even though it might be there with a indepth responce.
this "hot pepper" section goes through new threads like crazy, threads/posts only a day old are on the 2nd page & post less than 1 week might even be on the 3rd page, thats fast IMO, & some people tend not to flip through them.
but if the section was broken down some so threads dont fall by the wayside it'd help people find their answers/help faster, I would think.
I know this would mean some more work for you, sorry, I only brought this up as a suggestion. & no need to flip through all those pages to put the threads in the correct section, only go through the first 5 pages maybe ? of the "hot pepper" section & then from then on people would start posting in them.

I am also new at this homegrown pepper stuff, I am learning from the masters here on this board, sometimes your questions and concerns have already been discussed and it helps to go through the older posts that are simular to yours, dont forget People have lives and many of the members are American and have been celebrating Independence Day, and many like to pick this time for family reunions and going to the lake, so be considerate of the people here, they have lives even the pro's here have lives. And even Pam has a life ;) .

I don't like that idea. I like the general "Hot Pepper" section because threads have a way of naturally sliding from one subject to another without a new header. If you chop it all up, compartmentalize it to death, it impedes the easy flow of information. Are we to stop in the middle of a discussion about aphids on a Hatch pepper and switch forums when someone asks "What's a Hatch pepper?
Besides, people worry about if this is the correct forum to bring up a topic now, imagine if they had another dozen from which to choose!
it seems like these 2 kinds of topics have many threads, some have multi threads dealing with the same thing. & in general people tend not waste time for searching through several pages to get a answer even though it might be there with a indepth responce.
So, imagine if they had to search through numerous pages on numerous forums instead of just one or two forums.
this "hot pepper" section goes through new threads like crazy, threads/posts only a day old are on the 2nd page & post less than 1 week might even be on the 3rd page, thats fast IMO, & some people tend not to flip through them.

I guess then theres no need for "BBQ" "bbq sauce reviews" "grill/smoker talk" & "cookoffs, contests, events" "chili chat" they should be combined as one, since they're basically the same.
also "all foods" "the buzz" "recipe database (including sub forums)" "restaurants/hot sauce shops" should all be in 1 forum section.
also "sauce making 101" "test kitchen" "food biz" "bottling, packaging, marketing" "marketplace (including sub forums)" "hot sauce reviews" should ALL be combine into 1 forum with "hot peppers" since they're basically all talking about the same thing which is chiles/hot peppers/hot sauce.
then you'd have a really great forum section where the subjects flip flop endlessly & where you need to really search for some answers/help you're looking for, instead of going to a certain section of the forum that deals mostly with that subject matter to look for the answers/help you want. I know thats just crazy talk to imagine the thought of having a "bug/disease/virus" section where people could read some older(or new) threads that are about those problems & if they see the same problems others were having that they posted & have the answers they're looking for that might already be there in that thread.
yep I finally see the light , what was I thinking, we should combine EVERYTHING on this forum because it'd be more interesting looking for some answers, but hey at least the subject matter would be changing often so you shouldnt get that bored from the 1 & only section in a forum.
& yes you'll have some threads that are kinda off topic for that section but who cares shit happens this would be up to the mod's if they want to move that thread or not, but overall the subject matter would be consistent. I dont go looking through the "bottling, packaging, marketing" section to find answers about plant diseases or bugs eating the plants because IMO its a waste of time.

just imgaine this site as a "supercenter website" where you get all your questions answered, instead of going to different websites for answers because its not a chile or grilling BUT its still a product you grow in the garden or grill it up.
the supercenter quote is a lame joke about like the walmart supercenters where you can go shop & get everything you need at 1 place (food,clothes,medical,hunting/sporting,etc...)

This is not an either/or dilemma, where we either have 1 selection or 1000, and you know that. There is a point, however, above which the subdivision makes conversation unwieldy and splintered.
You are, after all, the one who was complaining about having a dial-up line and being frustrated at having to load and reload picture files. Suppose, instead of loading just the Hot Peppers forum to read most of the posts, you had to load one forum, read one or two threads, go back up the tree, load another forum, read one or two threads, go back up the tree, load yet another forum...etc. It would take you a lot longer to read posts.
then you'd have a really great forum section where the subjects flip flop endlessly & where you need to really search for some answers/help you're looking for, instead of going to a certain section of the forum that deals mostly with that subject matter to look for the answers/help you want.

Very few people bother to search before asking their question now, why do you think fragmenting the forum will change that?
And I think that re-asking a question is not necessarily a bad thing. New information on old problems may come up, and new members may have a solution or a tip that no one has considered before. To me, that's the beauty of an interactive forum. If static web pages were all that were necessary, people could just use Google and we could do away with this site altogether.
yep I finally see the light , what was I thinking, we should combine EVERYTHING on this forum because it'd be more interesting looking for some answers, but hey at least the subject matter would be changing often so you shouldnt get that bored from the 1 & only section in a forum.

Try the "All Foods" forum. Start a new thread about tomatoes or any food you'd like to discuss that doesn't already have it's own forum or sub-forum. If you start a thread on tomatoes, then tomatoes will be the topic. No need to feel guilty.

This is not an either/or dilemma, where we either have 1 selection or 1000, and you know that. There is a point, however, above which the subdivision makes conversation unwieldy and splintered.
then explain why is theres 3 review sections!
why is the "bbq" "grill/smoker talk" not 1 thread ?
why is "sauce making 101" "test kitchen" "food biz" "bottling, packaging, marketing" not all in 1 section ?
why is "all foods" "the buzz" "restaurants/hot sauce shops" "cookoffs, contests, events" not all in 1 thread ?

Very few people bother to search before asking their question now, why do you think fragmenting the forum will change that?
not all people are like that, me for one I'll look at some other threads to see if it'll answer my questions.
Nice of you to volunteer more work for them.
since I joined this site, "the hot pepper" site has added a couple new sections plus I bet over a year ago this website didnt have all these sections. makes you wonder why they made all these new sections to discuss things instead of just keeping everything under 1-3 sections.
maybe they did this to make it more user friendly & keep the website organized. which might attract more people to this website since those people might think "hey this website has its act together, I like its format its user friendly for having the topics organized" they might join or not ?
I find it kinda funny a website (THP) is mostly aimed at/for "chiles/peppers" but when it comes to discussing chiles/peppers on growing/diseases/bugs/strains/etc... you cram it all into 1 section. but how to make & sell hot sauces has 4 sections. BBQ'ing has 2. then subject matter dealing with other food/drink theres 6 sections that all could be combined as 1.

Look, you're still trying to create a false delemma and I'm not going to fall for that. This is not an either/or situation. Some division of subjects is both useful and encourages the flow of conversation. There is, however, too much of a good thing, and to subdivide subjects too much causes the conversations to splinter
and impedes the flow of information. There is no bright shining point where the conversion from "Useful" to "Too Much" occurs, which is why rushing to divide up the forums willy nilly is such a bad idea.
I haven't been a member all that long*, but my observation is that the moderators are fairly responsive to the currents of information flow and set up new forums as needed.
because it makes it easier to have them separated, people can find the help they need faster since they know where to look 1st instead of flipping through several pages to find info about what they're looking for.
So, they have to flip through several forums instead? How does that save time or effort? The search function on this forum gives you the option of searching for individual posts or threads that contain the search item. That negates the need to search though page after page by hand. Of course, that's if people bother to search for the information they need instead of just starting a new thread, which most seem to do. And I've already pointed out why I think that's not a bad idea, too.
I thought you said you're a usernet junkie ?
Card carrying, DEA certified.
well then you already should know the answer. depending on which thread if it has several pics I could bring up 5 pages from a thread before all the pics are done loading. its just the pics that are slow to load. & please tell me what is the point of making multi pics of the same pics in a thread ?
