JAKARTA (Reuters) - Prisoners in an Indonesian jail escaped after blinding guards with a liquid laced with fiery chili peppers, a police official said Tuesday.
Eighteen prisoners escaped from the Pematang Siantar Penitentiary in North Sumatra province Sunday, with 15 later recaptured and three still on the run, said Aspan Nainggolan, a police spokesman.
After being let out of their cells for breakfast, a group of prisoners attacked four guards using chili liquid held in a plastic water bottles and grabbed their keys.
A prison official said that the jail, housing more than 800 prisoners and located about 30 miles from the provincial capital Medan, had never had a break-out like it.
As in many other Asian countries, Indonesians season most meals with chili or use hot chili sauce.
