last night on food network was a show called throw down with bobby flay
last night cindy reed wilkins 2 time terlinqua champion back to back was on to cook chili against bobby. as a chili freak i loved watching it and if yall want to catch it it comes on again food network july 30th at 4pm and 11pm(im guessing eastern time) and again july 31st at 2 am.
That's a fun show. I'll tune in, as I'm curious to see what bizzare ingredients the Flay-meister puts in his "chili".

He's one of the few cooks/chefs who regularly uses different chiles in his dishes.

just got thur e mailing cindy's husband and i guess he runs he company anyway i have orderd a texas style chili mix from her and will be making it here at work.. i will give a review after i make it.
one thing i liked about her site...her shipping wasnt crazy..i ordered 1 pack of chili mix for 5 bucks and im gonna pay 1.25 for shipping. sometimes on ebay i get miffed at someone that will charge like 20 dollars for shiping and when you get it the sticker reads 2.50. most of the time i know its comming but still like to get miffed every once in a while....keeps the blood flowing.

Its been a long time, but I remember. How about the shower scene in Ace Ventura when he discovers the chick is a dude.

*** now the poll is 2 2 2
2 love em
2 hate em
2 haven seen em
this has got to be the closest poll in thehotpper.com history.
the reason i put up the poll is a friend of mine i was telling about the show with cindy the chili champion and when i mentioned that flay was gonna be on there he went balistic.......man i hate that arrogan blank blankety blank blank.
hmmmmmm which makes me think of another poll.

I didn't vote because you didn't have a "he's OK" option. I don't have a strong oppinon on him. He can be fairly annoying but I like some of his recipes.

.
He isn't afraid of chilis or open flame, I'll give him that. I really think he has very few tricks up his chef coat and is just recycling a few ideas with minor changes. He seems to always have an excuse at the start of competitions. I don't have alot of admiration for him.

You get some history, science and good food all in one. Plus he's creative with his show presentation.

Food Network:
Bobby Flay:
Mediocre chef, claims to know a lot about BBQ, but really he just grills stuff.
Alton Brown:
I can't take him seriously. He's like a mad scientist caricature. Does he really know food, or is it all scripted?
Emeril Lagasse:
The worst of the worst. Bad recipes, sloppy presentation, corny jokes.
Mario Batali:
Annoys the hell out of me!
Rachael Ray:
WTF! Annoying voice. Annoying recipes. EVOO?? Get over yourself.
Paula Dean:
Some disgusting home cooking. She made a salad with iceberg lettuce, bananas, raisins, mayonaise, cheese... should I keep going? She made corned beef and cabbage with a canned ham.
Tyler Florence:
Pretends to know how to cook to get laid.
Michael Chiarello:
Hmmm, don't recall anything too horrible, in fact, I think I saw a few appetizing things.
Sandra Lee:
She's okay.
Giada De Laurentiis:
She's okay too.
Sara Moulton:
Blah!
PBS:
Lidia Bastianich:
Now she can cook! Screw Food Network!

Giada De Laurentiis is hot. You don't even have to watch, just listening to her speak Italian words is sexy. Me and my roomate have bets before the show to see if she will or won't show cleavage. She cooks too?

Agree wholeheartedly!!
Alton Brown:

He really knows his stuff. His approach, the why's not just the hows, has influenced my cooking.
Emeril Lagasse:
The worst of the worst. Bad recipes, sloppy presentation, corny jokes.
restarauntaur whose recipes are difficult to reproduce at home. I think he's running out of material and cooking outside his expertise.
Mario Batali:
Annoys the hell out of me!
annoying maybe but this is the BEST, MOST SKILLED chef on the network. He knows his stuff better than anyone. I rarely try to reproduce his recipes because they always seem to have some impossible to find ingredient.
Rachael Ray:
WTF! Annoying voice. Annoying recipes. EVOO?? Get over yourself.
glad someone else thinks EVOO is stupid. I'd like to see what she can do with out the $40 or 30 minute limit to really judge her. right now she cooks like a good home cook.
Paula Dean:
Some disgusting home cooking. She made a salad with iceberg lettuce, bananas, raisins, mayonaise, cheese... should I keep going? She made corned beef and cabbage with a canned ham.
southern american cooking...yep, thats what it is. for goodness sake they boil peanuts down there
Anyone watch Americas Test Kitchen on PBS? That jerk is really annoying...but there is really good info every show. Don't you hate it when that happens.

I agree with you on Mario's know-how, but his expertise on Italian cuisine comes across as arrogance that I would accept better if he were a true Italian with an accent. Also he talks about obscure things from small towns in Italy, so it's easy to make stuff up, so who knows what's true. :)

Tyler's Ultimate (Tyler Florence) is a decent show. They show him doing his research before attempting the dish by going to restaurants that are famous for the dish, then he gets the secrets out of them, and makes his own version. I don't know if every show is like that, but that's a decent show.

Flay = Loves himself
Alton Brown = Definitely script, but entertaining and the kids love it.
Emeril = If he was the only food show on I'd probably watch him.
Mario = Better than Emeril
Rachael Ray = She likes BEER!!! She is spunky and likes to have fun! Thumbs up! A Boob job would be nice!
Paula Dean = I love southern cookin'!!! I think she's funny, and is my daughters favorite show. Hope she has a good cardiologist...
My favorite is Rick Bayless....

Anna Olson looks like she was hit in the face with a shovel.
Rachel Ray was hilarious on Jay Leno, but usually 30 min of straight talking
Emeril need to kick it up another notch. Bam. Incredibly boring.
Alton is entertaining in his nerdy way.

And Rick Bayless, think I've seen him, but he's not listed as having a show.

Like Flay. Cooks some good grub.
Dig Alton! Love to know the science of cooking!
Prefer to watch Giada with the sound off.
Would rather gouge out my own eyes and ears with a dull knide than ever have to watch Rachel Ray. (Even liking beer does nothing to change my opinion!)
Emirel makes me sick. If I got around of applause every time I mis-pronounced garlic, I'd be one happy cook.
Have a great day all, it was fun to post again, but now am running late!

I like Bayless too but why does he talk like Christian Slater?
I also Like Alton Brown's show. Educational and entertaining.
I don't think anyone's mentioned Steven Raichlen. I dig his show ( BBQ University) and his books.
Since I'm too cheap to pay for cable, it's PBS cooking shows for me....although I watched a lot of the Food Network a couple years ago. My favorite show was Iron Chef.

I think the really great chefs don't have time for their own TV shows. When you see cooking contests on TV, like a rib cook off in KC, you see pitmasters cooking Q that would blow Flay out of the water, yet he is hailed as a BBQ expert. You go to your favorite Italian restaurant, and you see the chef working over 10 hours a day every day. No time for TV. These shows are for entertainment. Some are not even chefs, but are hired because of their looks and abilities as a host. Alton Brown comes across as someone that was hired as a quirky host, who probably had to learn a lot about food after he got the job.

My wife and I used to LOVE the Two Fat Ladies. They used butter and bacon fat and the like that would put Paula Dean to shame!!! And what a couple of hooch hounds. For my money, that's good cookin!

I find on sunday morning that the guy I least want to hear from is the all-pro linebacker. as good as he was, his view of the game is limited to his position. The same thing for a chef who is brilliant in a small catagory. IMHO

I'm not saying I want to listen to them, I'm saying they are too busy for TV, but they would probably be boring as hell with no TV experience. Most of the chefs on TV have a background in TV. It's entertainment. That's why Emeril has a live audience and a band, and why people cheer for garlic and bam. They are more interested in cooking shows and paychecks than being restauranteurs.

I'm actually digging his show Feasting on Asphalt. He's less of a scripted character, and more himself. And I love road food shows. There's some real shitholes in the middle of nowhere that have great food.

Reall enjoying the Feasting show myself. Was a bit disappointed that he only made one stop in Charlotte NC. Heard there is also a great hot dog guy here by the name of Chili Man. He would have done well to stop by.

Two fat ladies had an awesome recipe once that I keep meaning to try:
Buy a big, unsliced loaf of bread
Cut one end off, near the end
Hollow the loaf out
Stuff with steak, onions, gravy, etc
replace cut off end
Put in oven to cook.
Bit simplified, but something like that. Almost as good as Jamie Oliver's bacon sandwich: Slice an unsliced loaf horizontally to get really long bread. And then use gammon. :)
Not chili related, I know, but you can always add some peppers to that if you want...

What bothers me about Alton is how many times he says "uh". Next time, take a listen. "I'd like to, uh, put this, uh, in the pot with some, uh..." I can't listen anymore.

I'm sorry, but I can't stand BF. He always strikes me as being an arrogant snob.
Alton Brown, now. Love it. He did a show on peppers I really loved. I still dig minced habanero and pineapple on vanilla ice cream. Yum.
Edit: My favorite cook is still Jeff Smith. Yeah, that guy. I don't know if anything was ever proved, I don't want to believe it could be true. Frugal Gourmet started my love of cooking.
